Think retirement is one big vacation? Turns out it's not. Here's why... There are the obvious reasons: - Expense: Retirement is wayyyy more expensive than a vacation! - Duration: Vacations last for a few days up to a couple of weeks where as retirement can be years or even decades long - Planning: Retirement you plan for decades; vacations months And the more nuanced reasons: - Routine: Vacations break the monotony of your daily routine where in retirement, you need to create a whole new routine - Social: Vacations are often a journey with others (family or friends) where retirement is often a solo journey of discovering what's next. #retirement #retirementplanning

When I retired three years ago, I thought it was going to be 1 giant vacation. Turns out there's a lot of reasons why it's not. There's a couple of really important distinctions. So the experience of vacation is really to get that mental break and that escape from work. It's to actually break the routine often on a vacation, probably eat more than I normally do, maybe drink more than I normally do. It's fun for the time that I'm away, but then you get back and you kind of get back into the routine. With retirement, because it's long as you start to eat and drink like you did on vacation and you don't, there's no ends. And so that can put you into like a bit of a spiral, which happened to me. I gained some weight because I drank like I was on vacation when actually I wasn't. The other big difference is that with vacation, it's a break from routine. In retirement, you actually have to create new routines. Final piece is the social component. Often when you're going on a vacation, you go with other people or you're meeting up with friends or family often. You might be retiring, you know, on your own if you have a spouse and partner, likely you're not retiring at the same time. And often many of your friends might still be working or they may have previously retired and already have kind of a social group. So you kind of have to find a new community, you know, in a new sort of social network when you retire. If you're retiring soon, note of these two things and you're better prepared than I am.

What really is retirement?... In reality, it's just a period where you have a lot more TIME because you aren't working. Retirement is sexy because you can dream about all the things you could do with that free time... But, what if I told you that you can likely do some of those things TODAY without waiting until retirement. The problem is that it can be hard to change your current routine. We're all busy and we come up with rationalizations as to why things can't really change (until we retire). Yet, the truth lies somewhere in the middle. While working, there are still many things you can do to take control of your life and start doing more of the things you love today. Next week, I'll be talking about how you can start doing that.
