Back in the day the founders, Clare and David Hieatt, started an ethical clothing company called Howies. They wanted to build a company that did good and stood for something. They wanted it to be based in their beloved Wales and build a community. The business grew but they learnt the hard way when they lost control of the company and were forced to sell. During this period they also started The Do Lectures, a bringing together of people who believe there is a different way to do business. It takes place on their farm and is a truly remarkable experience that anyone who has been lucky enough to attend will swear by. The conversations inbetween the lectures are the most important parts. Do publishing was launched off the back of the Do Lectures. A series of books written by individuals who care about their chosen topic. HIUT Denim’s aim was to get the town of Cardigan making jeans again. There used to be 400 people earning a living making jeans back in the day. They may be some way off that number, but the point is they are not just making jeans. They are building a community. A community that benefits their home town and tries to make products the right way. None of the above is easy. A life spent trying to do the right thing, sourcing the most ethical denim, advising us not to wash our jeans because it isn’t good for the environment. Small steps in the right direction.
