Being part of the solution for rebuilding our nation's schools
There were a couple of interesting pieces last week by the BBC on the Department for Education's "School Replacement Programme" (or SRP as those of us within it see it mostly in the world of BIM!) focusing on one of our local Multi-Academy Trusts, Olympus Academy Trust (OAT). This was made particularly topical being in the lead-up to the Education Estates® Exhibition | Conference | Awards. The article on BBC news website and a Radio 4 programme, include insights into the re-building programme, including from Dave Baker, CEO of OAT who I've worked with on a number of their schools around South Gloucestershire/ North Bristol which piqued my interest in the journalism.
The photos in the article perfectly illustrate the condition of all the schools that I've visited in the School Rebuilding Programme. They are often buildings, courts, car parks etc that feel like they are time capsules from when many of us, who are in the position to effect change, went to school in them. The need for renewal is clear when seen on the ground which is a brilliant motivation when you're working on them, although often a frustration when delays ensue.
Like anyone involved, it would be brilliant to be getting these schools renewed faster, as highlighted by these articles, with pitfalls along the way, but it's a brilliant part of the construction industry to be in and I'm grateful to be part of the solution.
