Dear Students, Get Involved!
A wise person once said, "The more you put into your college experience, the more you'll get out of it. Get involved, and you'll discover passions you never knew you had."
I can personally attest to this. My journey at Humber College truly began when I got involved with the Black Student Support and Engagement (BSSE) program. As a first-year student, I was searching for a place where I could build connections, and I found exactly that in BSSE. The events and activities immediately drew me in, and before long, I was spending most of my time there.
Not only did I find a community, but I also found an opportunity to work as an Outreach Assistant. In this role, I support the Program Coordinator and facilitators in creating and implementing programs to help Black-identifying students navigate campus life.
Getting involved with BSSE has given me a profound sense of community, belonging, and unshakeable confidence. It connected me with incredible individuals who saw potential in me that I hadn’t yet recognized. For example, it was my colleagues at BSSE who encouraged me to run for office as a student union leader, something I hadn’t previously considered.
Did I always dream of becoming a student leader? Honestly, no. Was I fully aware of Humber’s student union before? Not really. But through this community, I found the inspiration and support to pursue this path.
There’s something truly magical about knowing that a group of people believes in you. Getting involved was the best decision I made in my first year at Humber College. It empowered me to dream bigger, and today, as I enter my third year, I’m proud to say that I serve as the Chair of the Board of Directors for Humber College and the University of Guelph-Humber Student Union, IGNITE.
So, to every student out there, don’t just attend college or university this fall semester, experience it. Find your community, get involved, and watch how it transforms your life.
