This August, we're partnering with Hilda Dunford from @Our_Blindside on Instagram and TikTok to bring you some #BackToSchool tips for parents of blind or visually impaired students! August is #ChildrensEyeHealthAndSafetyMonth, so here are three tips for preparing for the first day of school for a student who is blind. 1. Get there early - several days early. With your students' schedule in hand, take the time to walk and learn their daily route from one class to the next. 2. If your child changes classrooms, ask teachers to allow them to leave each class 5 minutes early. This will allow them to get a head start on their next class before the halls become crowded. 3. Ensure your child has an accessible locker and can find it easily. All of these things will help a low vision or blind student be successful from their first to last day of school! Addressing social skills throughout the day is imperative in our classrooms and therapy settings, especially for our children who may experience deficits in communication and social interaction. Recently, in Room 6, teachers have observed remarkable progress in these areas, capturing moments that highlight the strides made by our students. Did you know, the current physical education system was created in the 1900s? Even then the programs didn’t support children. While history cannot be rewritten, we CAN write a different future. A change in how schools approach physical education, movement courses, and other ways of supporting physical identity is needed. Repost my work if you believe in this future. Help spread the word and awareness! #family #parenting #physicaleducation #exercise #getoutdoors #physicalidentity #communityaction #bethechange

🕺 There should be no "special education classrooms" in our buildings. Spaces for support, when needed, should be for evidence-based intervention for any student who needs it. Homework help ≠ intervention. #LeadInclusion #EdLeaders #Educators #UDL #TeacherTwitter
