My clients and friends often tell me it is hard for them to recruit potential participants for their research interviews. I get that. It's not easy. One recently expressed frustration that despite having a very worthwhile and relevant project, and a $50 gift card incentive, she had fallen far short of her recruiting goal. She wished someone had told her that her recruiting goal was too ambitious for her timeframe, and that most people were not going to say yes. Here are some tips that you might find useful if you are planning a project that involves interviewing. But the bottom line is this: MOST PEOPLE WILL SAY NO. To get to your goal, reach out to ten times more people than you were thinking you would. Don't worry; you'll get there! And....... [spoiler alert] I'm working on a training course that should be available in early September, if all goes well. Recruiting will be covered in the course! Stay tuned!

Employers: We're starting to give $5 gift cards to rejected candidates who went through our hiring process and didn't get hired. The messaging is "We were impressed by you, really value your time, and want to thank you by buying you a coffee - and hopefully we have the opportunity to work with you in the future." My thinking is that $50 is very little to pay to keep 10 candidates feeling that their time is valued - and I'm sure that adds a positive lift to employment brand. I'm executing this with Jillian MacKellar, our newest team member who's leading our recruitment efforts. We came up with it together today in a meeting. What do other employers in my network do for candidate rejections? Any risks you foresee associated with this?

Build a personal rewards program for your network. A lot of people don't stay in touch with the folks who referred them to a job. But it is an easy way to keep filling the relationship bank and build your network stronger. I believe in saying thank you several times and in several different ways. Make your "thank yous" bigger if someone continues to help you or keeps providing value. I know a consultant to bought one of his former clients a cruise ticket after referring others to him so much. You don't have to go that far but you can do your own mini version of a rewards program for your network and friends. Here is a simple process you could follow: -- Send a thank you email to your referrer and venmo them $5 for coffee. -- Send them updates as you move through the interview process and thank them again. -- Send them a gift card if you get an offer. -- Send a personalized gift 3-6 months into your job after learning what the person likes You can't really thank someone too much and if you do it at strategic times it will motivate the other person to continue supporting you. Showing gratitude feels good to both you and the receiver. It's a secret weapon that many people underutilize, especially in business. P.S.
