World Ocean’s Day: Celebrating with the 2023 OBEL AWARD Winner, Living Breakwaters by SCAPE Landscape Architecture DPC June 8 is World Oceans Day, designated by the UN General Assembly in 2008. The day was established to raise awareness about human beings' connection with the oceans.   The OBEL AWARD has always advocated connecting the built and natural environments. Our oceans and other bodies of water are not just resources; they are lifelines. They generously provide us with food, biodiversity, transportation, economic benefits, leisure, and the health of people and the planet. The 2023 OBEL Award-winning project exemplifies how working with nature can bring long-lasting positive changes. Thanks to this restorative project, the underwater ecosystem in Staten Island, NY, is undergoing a phenomenal transformation. What a stunning day here in Wellington with Resene Construction Systems! 😍 I was absolutely thrilled when Jordan from @motiveeventsnz reached out and asked me to be the speaker for their upcoming event. 🎤 I didn’t realise this would be her last event before embarking on her journey across the globe…Thanks for everything you’ve involved me in Joran. Leading up to the conference, I had a briefing call with Rochelle, Simon, and Mike, and their energy was just infectious! 😃 Their warm welcome at the conference, complete with their merchandise, made me feel incredibly valued and appreciated. I WAS READY TO ROCK!!! ❤️ The morning session kicked off with an economist discussing the state of the nation / economy / future. But whether we’re focused on the challenges or the opportunities, the stories we tell ourselves have a profound impact on our dreams and, consequently, our results. And remember that AWEsome starts with Awe, stuff that can be a little bit scary, but when we get to the other side that AWE becomes AWEsome! It was neat to reinforce the power of optimism through inspiration and celebrate what the conference was striving for: 1. I love so much about this story from Positive News. Simple, fun, call-to-action to boost biodiversity and climate resilience in the Netherlands. 'This year marks the fourth annual Tegelwippen – which translates literally as ‘tile whipping’ – where Dutch municipalities compete in a lighthearted contest to remove the most paving slabs.' And it's a lovely example of how small individuals actions can culminate in a more significant change on a bigger scale. Sometimes behaviours and actions around the climate crisis can feel like a drop in the ocean - obviously there are some major systemic things to tackle which are sorely needed - but it's nice to see and validate the role of individual and community-level action, because every positive step counts. And this is a heart-warming example of that. It's got green spaces, biodiversity, mental wellbeing, and community (and a little dose of healthy competition) all rolled up into one. '“The competition is a gimmick of course,” says Frank Lee creative director Eva Braaksma. “People really like to compete! But the power of the thing is its simplicity. Watch this! I have spent the last few months reading, and watching, and listening - so many incredible people talking about our connection to nature. During that time I have watched probably 50 TED or TEDx talks - always seeking the exact right message for the story I am trying to weave. And some of them have been beautiful and profound. But this TEDx talk by Lyla June, titled "3000-year-old solutions to modern problems" is the most impactful and beautiful talk I have heard so far. Biophilic design is not new. This is a calling of the deepest connection humans have to nature - and I cannot possibly say it better than Lyla June can. Yesterday I attended the CIBSE Building Performance Reimagined conference. It was an inspiring day of talks (including an excellent keynote from CIBSE's President, Fiona Cousins), panel discussions and opportunities to discuss with colleagues on the future of our built environmenta nd our role in it. Many thoughts on what we mean by "performance", how to promote the shift from prescriptive based design to performance based design, and the balance between design/simulation and operation/monitoring, among many others.
