When not exercising, planning to exercise, thinking about exercising, hosting a race, or designing exercise attire, gym clothes are set aside. Tonight’s alumni event was hosted by the University of the Free State, my alma mater. Here’s the twist: There has never been a visit to UFS. The diploma in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, and Project Management was completed through distance learning, along with a degree in Quantity Surveying. Admission to the diploma program was a stroke of grace, as university policy typically prevented younger students from enrolling in distance learning programs due to high dropout rates. Joined a quantity surveying firm right after high school while pursuing these studies. The challenge of not knowing what a skirting was made a hard copy construction dictionary an invaluable resource.Best wishes to Professor Francis Petersen, the outgoing Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Free State. Teacher: "How far are you in your university courses?" Me: "I actually didn't end up pursuing university, and went into the trades!" Teacher: "Hmmf... That's disappointing..." I loved learning in High school. Really. But when it came to tests and exams, my answers were never the right ones. Yup, I was a 'C' grade average kid. I tried hard, but never got the grades needed. But for some reason, I was always encouraged to pursue the university route by my teachers. Grade 12 came and went, and I went to university for 3 months to get the grades needed to actually be accepted into university. After completing those 3 months I knew I couldn't continue. It wasn't for me. So into the trades I went, going to college and excelling in Landscape Construction! Hands on work was where it was at for me! 😎 This story is one of the reasons why TruGrit was born. I believe the construction industry is under-appreciated, taken for granted and looked down upon. Yes, the stigma is slowly changing, but we need our industry to share more and more success stories of the people in their companies! If you're in construction, and have a story to tell, we'd love to work with you! You can be a part in changing the stigma. You can be a part in mentoring the next generation. You can be a part of educating and inspiring people to enter this great industry. Biannual Admission in Indian Universities and Higher Education Institutes from 2024-25 UGC has announced admission in Indian Universities twice in a year from this academic session 2024-25. The two admission cycles will be July-August and January-February. This will help the student to apply for admission for higher education during July- August or session starting from January-February. The biannual admission cycle in Indian Universities will be in line with the foreign Universities followed globally. This will help Indian Universities and Higher Education Institutes can enhance their international collaborations and student exchange programs.

Thinking of a career in planning or a career change. What boost to get you on your way. Given the breath of NPF4 encouraging other professions to get involved in planning - ecologists, architects, engineers, surveyors to name a few.

I am proud University of Washington College of Built Environments alumni, first gen, and it was just announced that I was promoted to Associate Teaching Professor in the UW Construction Management Department. At 72 I am still working to promote diversity in construction and construction education. After a long career in construction, that started way back in 1972, and after my retirement from industry in 2020, I returned to the University of Washington as a full-time assistant teaching professor to give back to the industry that I have been proud to be part of. My hope is that I can be good role model to both my female and male students and help guide them on their path to careers in construction. My advice is to choose a career that you love, never listen to naysayers, and happiness will follow you in life. Mine has been a path in construction. PS - Never be afraid of getting old. You are never too old. Many people tell me as a woman not to mention my age as people will look at you as grandma who should be home knitting. However, I am proud of my age and my construction accomplishments, because older professional construction women are very wise and have many construction lesson learned, just like older professional men. For us women in construction, first we were to young and then we were too old, let’s break this myth. Older women are wise and never underestimate a young woman on a construction site, she might surprise you in her project ideas or knowledge! #womeninconstruction #constructionmanagement #constructionindustry #construction
