Referrals are one of the fastest ways to get your foot in the door at a company, but they don’t happen overnight. Building genuine connections and earning a referral takes strategy and patience.
Here’s how to approach getting referrals the right way:
1️⃣ Research and Engage with Your Target Contacts
Before asking for a referral, identify employees at your target company and start engaging with them on LinkedIn. Comment on their posts, share relevant articles, and build familiarity over time.

“Hi [Name], I loved your recent post on [topic]—really insightful! I’m currently exploring opportunities in [field], and I’d love to stay connected and learn more about your experience at [Company].”
2️⃣ Ask for Advice, Not a Referral (Yet!)
Instead of jumping straight to a referral, ask for an informational chat to learn about their role, the company culture, or what skills they think are most important for success. This shows genuine interest and helps build rapport.
