During Black History Month, Alice Walker's quote takes on added significance as it reflects the historical and ongoing struggle for empowerment within the Black community. Throughout history, Black individuals and communities have faced systemic oppression, discrimination, and disenfranchisement. Despite these challenges, countless individuals have demonstrated remarkable resilience and strength in asserting their rights and fighting for equality. Alice Walker's quote reminds us of the importance of reframing narratives to center empowerment and agency. Today marks the 11 years since the founding of Black Lives Matter in response to the acquittal of the murderer of Trayvon Martin. This global social justice movement is dedicated to ending violence and injustice against Black people, and advocating for a world where Black lives are valued, respected, and celebrated. This decade has seen significant progress, but much more still needs to be done. As a community, we continue to work hard to build trust and achieve a world where systemic racism is eliminated. Today, we celebrate Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, bringing the news that the Civil War had ended and that enslaved people were now free—two and a half years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth is a time for reflection, education, and celebration. It's a reminder of the enduring struggle for freedom and equality and an opportunity to honor the resilience, strength, and contributions of Black Americans throughout history. At Dragonfly MSP, we stand in solidarity with the Black community and commit to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion within our company and beyond. We believe in the power of education, open dialogue, and action to drive positive change. Let's take this day to learn, reflect, and celebrate. Today we recognize and celebrate America’s “Second Independence Day,” Juneteenth. At GovEx, where we focus on putting data to work for the public good, we know that data was used to dehumanize Black Americans during slavery and that descendants of enslaved people have often been victimized by the unethical collection and application of data. We are committed to addressing structural and entrenched racism, recognizing the public sector’s role in perpetuating these legacies, and addressing these issues as a team and in collaboration with the cities we serve. This means examining analytical methods and data, actively working to eliminate bias, and advocating for data-driven policies that uplift Black Americans. In celebrating the rich legacy of Black excellence in America, we’re called upon to defend against the surging efforts to dismantle equity programs. We must sustain the progress that has moved us toward a more equitable society, not let it whither. But sustaining progress demands more than having a DEI department – organizations must actively listen to marginalized voices and create systems that make equity intrinsic to the business.
