Managing for quality in ABA services with the Juran Trilogy is quality planning, quality control, and quality improvement. These universal principles can be applied to any aspect of service delivery in an ABA service setting. For example, for the implementation of discrete trial training by an RBT, quality planning is a job aide that lists and describes the steps of conducting DTT; quality control consists of the actions the clinical supervisor takes to ensure that the RBT reliably and accurately implements all steps of DTT over time; quality improvement is a major increase from the baseline rate of accurate implementation of DTT by RBTs per week. In the world of ABA, let us not forget that driving is one of the most dangerous behaviors in the world. BCBAs and RBTs are constantly engaging in this behavior. Despite the risks, including navigating through pouring rain due to the relentless demands of their roles, they remain devoted to providing essential therapy on time. Even though it’s a dangerous behavior, they maneuver through traffic, detours, and unpredictable driving conditions with skill and a sense of humor... 👌 What do RBTs really want? 🦸 As the superheroes of ABA therapy, Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) spend their days helping clients achieve behavioral breakthroughs. But to keep fighting the good fight daily, RBTs need the right support system behind them. 🛜 I have been online networking the past year with RBTs throughout the country! I can tell you exactly what the talk has been. These are the 5 five elements that techs typically want when working for an ABA company: 1️⃣ Competitive pay: RBT is an important role that requires specialized training. RBTs want to be paid fairly based on their education, experience level, and certification status. 2️⃣ Professional development opportunities: Continuing education is important in the field of ABA to stay current on research and best practices. RBTs are being REQUIRED to obtain CEUs in the near future (due to the BACB updates). Therefore, RBTs want opportunities to attend workshops and trainings. 3️⃣ Manageable caseload: RBTs want a caseload size that allows them to provide quality 1-on-1 ABA therapy sessions without being overwhelmed. 4️⃣ Support from supervisors: Supervision is required to maintain certification. RBTs want supervisors who are available to answer questions, observe sessions, and provide constructive feedback. Also, they want them to do this consistently, not when it is convenient. 5️⃣ Work-life balance: Working with clients and families can be both rewarding and emotionally taxing. I speak to a lot of RBTs, Behavior Technicians, and BCBAs. I also talk to a lot of clinic owners/executive teams. The main takeaway is: 1) employees (RBTS/BCBAS) want to feel supported and 2) employers need help making their company an exciting place to work to retain and employ new RBTS/BCBAs. There are so many areas that I am eager to get into and help this industry but one immediate area is companies investing in their employees' education and aspiration to grow in the field. One simple thing we are trying to do to right now is partner (with no cost to the companies) in providing their employees discounts on all BCBA/RBT/BCABA Test prep and CEUs.
