Fascinating Metal Memory ... Nitinol, also known as Nickel-Titanium, is a unique metal alloy that exhibits shape memory and superelasticity properties when subjected to temperature changes. It is composed of approximately 50% nickel (Ni) and 50% titanium (Ti) by weight. The combination of these two metals gives Nitinol its extraordinary characteristics. Nickel contributes to the alloy's shape memory effect, allowing it to retain its original shape even after being severely deformed. On the other hand, titanium provides the alloy with its superelasticity, enabling it to return to its original shape when heated or subjected to stress. The atomic arrangement of Nitinol plays a vital role in its shape memory behavior. At lower temperatures, the alloy is in its martensitic phase, which allows for easy deformation. However, upon heating, Nitinol undergoes a phase transformation into its austenitic phase, causing it to revert to its original shape. The unique properties of Nitinol make it highly sought after in various industries, including medical devices, aerospace, and robotics. Shape memory alloys (SMAs) are materials that can remember their original shape and return to it after being deformed. This property is due to a solid-state phase transformation that occurs in the material. The two main phases involved are the high-temperature phase, called austenite, and the low-temperature phase, called martensite. The unique characteristic of SMAs is their ability to undergo significant deformation at one temperature, and then recover their original, undeformed shape when heated above a certain temperature. This behavior is called the shape memory effect. Additionally, some SMAs can also exhibit superelasticity, which is the ability to undergo large strains and immediately return to their original shape upon unloading, without the need for heating. The most commonly used SMA is an alloy of nickel and titanium called Nitinol, which has applications in various fields such as aerospace, robotics, medicine, and consumer products. AM Friends, See below an interesting open-access study of Ni-base superalloy Haynes 282 built at elevated temperature (1000 °C) with Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion. The authors have explored a discrete spot melting strategy with random melt order, as opposed to the conventional line melting with a continuously moving melt pool.
