Many family caregivers are caring for someone they have a complicated history with. In my situation, I began caring for my mother when her dementia had progressed to a stage where she wasn't able to process nor participate in difficult conversations about our past. But in order to move forward as her caregiver, I needed to put the past behind us. This is where the concept of self-focused forgiveness came in. As opposed to forgiveness in the traditional sense, self-focused forgiveness doesn't require conditions set by another person, but shifts the focus to controlling the controllable: our own actions. Healing the past enables family caregivers to address what they need to do in the present without thinking about what they've done in the past. If you would like to read more about my in-depth approach to self-focused forgiveness in the context of family caregiving, check out my book linked below. 📖 OMG! I'm the Grownup!
