Here comes 9,000 trees 🌳 We're ecstatic to announce that The Friends is the proud recipient of a grant from the Julia Rausing Trust The Trust is contributing £190,000 towards the Silk Wood Community Planting Project (SWCPP) over the next two years, which will fund 9,000 trees planted in the arboretum. What's more, the grant will be used to add new physical interpretation of the woodland, delivering a series of both artist and educational workshops. Emma Griffiths, CEO, The Friends says “We are over the moon and beyond grateful to The Julia Rausing Trust for partnering with us and offering this significant award which will result in the delivery of such an important project at Westonbirt Arboretum. The SWCPP is all about inclusion and community; it would be easy to simply bring in contractors to ‘put things right,’ but instead the heart of SWCPP focusses on young people, those from disadvantaged backgrounds, and those with physical and neurodiverse conditions, across a broad range of ethnicities. This means that the arboretum’s beautiful newly restored woodland is designed, planted, managed, monitored and cared for, now and in the future, by Westonbirt Arboretum teams, community groups, schools and other volunteers." Fed up with an overgrown, unusable space on their school site, Blackrod Primary School are using the Green Spaces Fund to turn it into a community garden for children, families, and community members 🍎 They'll be growing food, teaching about wildlife and healthy food production, and introducing a composting system to enhance soil health and reduce waste. The school hope that their Green Spaces Fund project will foster a closer-knit, healthier community whilst providing accessible green space in Bolton. Lancashire Wildlife Trust

I just woke up to the strangest image of Mark from Regen Canberra standing in the crown of a Red Oak tree on their farm site in Lake Burley Griffin, with the thought in mind of that tree, Regen Canberra, actually being a Community Land Trust (CLT) as the keeper of that land, stewarded by the people The land is government-owned, so what better structure could there be to start approaching the government for crown land parcels? On top of that, there is the uPPP grant that would help us fund development work of suitable land parcels in the region All this was triggered by our Regen Places Network weekly meeting, where Mark was the project lead in one of the breakout rooms We were first chartering from the bioregion in reference to its unique contribution to the watershed, and then from his farm project to the bioregion, looking for the thread of its unique essence and contribution to the nested wholes This is where Mark started touching on the importance of governance and the framework for people to coordinate and work together on shared goals around their work. This was the point I introduced CLT’s as a structure to develop community-owned and led land-based assets, including housing, farms, and infrastructure "At the core of every community is the pursuit of well-being, stability, and a sense of belonging. Community Land Trusts (CLTs) are non-profit organizations that help cultivate environments where these values can flourish, holding land for the collective benefit of a place-based community. College Township Secures $300,000 DCNR Grant For Development of ClearWater Community Conservation Center; Next DCNR Grant Round Opens Jan. 21  [PaEN] https://lnkd.in/ebDuHbcC

ICYMI: Last week, the City of Jacksonville and Jacksonville Transportation Authority kicked off an ongoing partnership to plant trees at bus stops throughout the city to provide shade for transit riders, beautify the city, and improve community health. This marks the first phase of trees to be identified and planted through the City and JTA collaboration with funding from the Jacksonville Tree Commission. Future phases of tree plantings at bus stops will be coordinated by the Office of Resilience, Department of Public Works, and JTA. “The plan will ensure trees are properly maintained ensure safety, provide ecological benefits, and make our public spaces beautiful," said Mayor Donna Deegan. "It will guide serve as a guide for the City’s Tree Commission to distribute the City’s Tree Fund for planting the right trees in the right places."
