This morning and I sip from my coffee mug, an awesome gift from our foreign exchange student, it reminds me of the incredible experiences that come our way when we are open to challenges and new perspectives. Being a host family has enriched my family’s lives in ways I never imagined. It’s more than just sharing our home; it’s been lessons learned by diving into the cultures, stories, and traditions that exist beyond our little bubble. Each conversation is an opportunity to learn about places like Mallorca, and every shared meal becomes a window into a different way of life. In business, just like in life, we must embrace the challenges that come our way. Continuous learning is essential for growth and success. Much like the stories we exchange as a host family, the insights we gain from diverse experiences can open doors to innovative ideas and new connections. While there are so many areas in business that can stress you out to no end the very challenges and opportunities to learn and grow help keep me alive! So, let’s celebrate the beauty of stepping out of our comfort zones, be it through hosting an exchange student or tackling a new project at work. The world has so much to offer if we’re willing to accept the challenges and learn from them. Here’s to new adventures and the richness they bring! 🌍✨ #HostFamily #CulturalExchange #ContinuousLearning #EmbraceChallenges #BusinessGrowth

Get expanded cultural awareness! First and foremost, studying abroad is a chance to immerse yourself in a foreign culture. You get to experience a different way of life, which broadens your horizons and helps you appreciate diversity. Learning about different customs, traditions, and beliefs provides you with a better understanding of the world around you. Living and studying among people of a different culture also furthers your awareness of your own cultural perspectives, and helps you develop cross-cultural communication skills, a highly valuable ability in a globalized world.

To Study Abroad or Not to Study Abroad: That is the Question As someone who has studied, lived, worked, and moved around Italy for the last three years, I consider myself well-versed in the intricacies of studying abroad. My journey is filled with experiences that could fill a novel, and today, I want to share some insights based on my personal adventure. If I were to start my journey again, here are three key considerations I’d keep in mind: ✅Language Learning is an Investment: For social integration and professional life, language skills are crucial. I recommend achieving at least a B1 level proficiency before arriving. ✅Choose Your Accommodation Wisely: Your environment matters. In 3 years, I’ve lived in 5 different cities and nearly 20 different living spaces. 😳 Finding the right place can significantly impact your experience. ✅Your Learning Style is Unique: Don’t try to follow others blindly. Take advice with a pinch of salt and understand that you are the technical expert on yourself. These three factors, while simple and perhaps obvious, are foundational to creating a positive and enriching experience abroad. That’s all for this week. Happy Friday! #learningwithlykha #studyabroad

A broadened perspective on global and self-awareness These past four weeks at CIMBA have been eye-opening and presented me with many lifelong opportunities and memories. I can’t believe how fast these four weeks have gone, from first stepping on campus and not knowing what this study-abroad experience would hold. In Molly Rapert's Global Consumer course, I learned about many events occurring in China, a topic I knew little about beforehand. I have broadened my global awareness of issues and business practices outside the U.S. Studying abroad has allowed me to gain a perspective on Italy’s culture and, in the classroom, learn about China’s growing influence on the world. Travel weekends have allowed me to immerse myself in Italian culture and see the differences and similarities first-hand compared to my daily life in the U.S. In America, it is common for people to have a “live to work” mindset, compared to Italy’s “work to live” perspective. I quickly learned about the relaxed atmosphere of businesses in Italy. It is common for companies to take breaks, typically from 12-3 pm each afternoon, for rest. Many manufacturing companies we visited on class field trips had a significant focus on the quality of products to satisfy all customers’ needs and wants. Studying the difference in business practices has been notable to my knowledge of consumer markets and business practices, which I will carry into my professional career. Specifically, the Uyghur population and Belt Road Initiative topics opened my eyes to the events happening in China. From a world I thought I knew more about, Molly’s Global Consumer course has encouraged me to look deeper into topics outside the United States. It’s easy to stay focused on topics directly affecting you, but bringing awareness to the things affecting others has been a notable takeaway I’ve gained. The opportunity to study abroad has enabled me to widen my outlook on current issues and bring home knowledge that I didn’t know existed before. On Monday of week four, I sat in one of the most impactful college lectures by far. Molly shared a quote that will stick with me forever: "Think of this time as just one of many dominoes that might be pushing you in a new direction… or reinforcing the direction you are in.” Students in our global consumer course were given a domino reflecting the direction we are working towards and the growth each day brings. Studying abroad has been the experience I’ve been looking for that has allowed me to further define my goals and purpose in my personal and professional life. I will forever be grateful for the experience of being a student of Molly’s and an alumni of the CIMBA program.

Part 1: The challenge of a new environment A semester abroad in Seville - it sounds like adventure, freedom and new impressions. And it is. But the picture is not always as ideal as it might seem from the outside. Moving to a new city, a foreign country with a completely different culture means leaving behind a lot of things that were taken for granted. In Seville, everyday life is different. Meal times - a bit of a challenge for me at first - are much later. Breakfast is often a small snack, while lunch doesn't take place until around 3 pm. Dinner often doesn't start until 9 pm or later. This different sense of time affects everything. The day is structured differently here and I had to learn to adapt to it. The mentality is also a new experience: in Seville you can feel a warmth and calmness that can hardly be compared with the often hectic everyday life in Germany. But as an exchange student, it takes time to really immerse yourself in this culture and engage with people whose way of thinking and priorities are different. Finding the balance between my own identity and adapting to the new environment is sometimes a challenge - but one that I gratefully accept. #semesterabroad #challenge #newenvironment
