Believe it's just a matter of time before the appetite for hybrid and remote working styles diminishes? Quite the contrary - research shows workplaces are becoming more flexible. Flexa Careers revealed their recent stats, between April and June, we've seen a jump of 15% in remote job requests. Their data could seem slightly subjective given their expertise, but it's eye-opening to learn that 88% of workers worldwide prefer an arrangement that allows them to work from any location. In my capacity as a recruiter for Benskin & Hott Talent Partners, numbers aren't my main focus. Yet, one can't ignore the growing popularity of remote work. Having worked extensively with job seekers, I've noticed a distinct shift in priorities - remote work is becoming a significant factor for many. However, don't get misled believing it’s the only golden ticket. One cannot operate on rigidity while trying to attract the best talent. Yes, a company's remote work policy is becoming increasingly important, but it's a single piece of a much larger puzzle.

In the maze of corporate life, we often get lost in the buzzwords, the jargon that fills our meetings and emails. "Jennifer, let’s circle back on that." "I’m not married to the idea." "Time to pivot." These phrases, often hollow, serve as shortcuts. Yet, they can cloud genuine communication. Matt Watson, a lead web developer at Storyware, offers some fresh alternatives. He suggests: "I will investigate the matter and get back to you." "I’m not fettered by that proposal." "Let’s rethink this plan." Yes, simpler words could be chosen. But the essence remains: clear, honest communication can be our compass. Still, some phrases, like "out of an abundance of caution," have lost their way, overused and empty. What corporate jargon do you think needs to retire?

In Q2 2024, burnout hit an all-time high according to Glassdoor reviews. Why? HR Brew summed it up: Burnout has surged because companies haven’t addressed it since the pandemic. Chronic stress, understaffed teams, layoffs, and relentless pressures feed this fire. “Jennifer, what can one HR organization do to combat this?” Though I don't have all the answers, I have some ideas. Better support for mental health and more job support are crucial. It's vital to survey employees on what they truly need. An engagement consultant told HR Brew, “at least 20% of work time should be spent on tasks that energize employees.” Can we afford to overlook such insights?

When CrowdStrike CEO Michael Sentonas stepped onto the stage at Def Con, the audience gasped. He was there to accept the Pwnie Award, given to companies with the year's biggest security failures. CrowdStrike earned this recognition. A July IT outage affected 8.5 million Microsoft Windows systems, disrupting air travel, broadcasting, and more. Accepting this award was a lesson in leadership. Sentonas showed that true leaders own their mistakes. He said, “We got this horribly wrong… and it’s super important to own when you do things well, but it’s super important to own when you do things horribly.” He plans to display the award at CrowdStrike HQ as a reminder to always strive for the best. Leadership is not easy. It means owning up when things go wrong. True strength lies in resilience and authenticity.

Annoyed by your co-workers? You’re not alone. A recent Kickresume survey found that 85% of nearly 3,000 employees have dealt with annoying colleagues. The top offender? The “credit stealer.” This behavior, among others, significantly impacts productivity for many. Switching jobs won’t eliminate all annoying co-workers, but sometimes a change brings fresh, less annoying faces. If you’ve reached your tipping point, let’s talk. As a recruiter at Benskin & Hott Talent Partners specializing in HR, Accounting, and Finance, I’m here to help you find a workplace that fits you better.
