Youth development and career and technical education (CTE) programs have the potential to shape the future workforce, especially in fields like advanced manufacturing. These life-changing programs can provide our youth with the necessary skills to thrive in the workplace and create a robust talent pipeline that industries can rely on for sustainable growth. And let's not forget to mention the starting salary and economic mobility! CTE programs, in particular, have been gaining traction as they offer practical skills and training directly aligned with the industry's needs. Initiatives like the U.S. Department of Education's "Raise the Bar: Unlocking Career Success" aim to bridge the gap between K-12 education and workforce programs, ensuring that students are prepared for in-demand jobs in sectors such as advanced manufacturing. Moreover, employment opportunities in advanced manufacturing are on the rise, with companies like General Dynamics Mission Systems and Advanced Manufacturing Careers offering positions that require specialized skills obtained through CTE programs. This underscores the importance of aligning educational programs with industry needs to ensure that students are job-ready upon graduation. Building a talent pipeline in manufacturing is also crucial for addressing the skills gap that many companies face. Strategies like partnering with local educational institutions for apprenticeship programs and providing diverse training opportunities can help companies cultivate a skilled workforce ready to tackle the challenges of modern manufacturing. The synergy between youth development, CTE programs, and employment strategies is key to fostering a talent pipeline that meets the demands of advanced manufacturing or any other in-demand sector. With adequate funding, flexible training programs, and the commitment of industry partners, we can ensure a steady influx of skilled workers, driving innovation and growth for years to come. #FutureReadyWorkforce #SkillsGapSolved #InvestInCTE https://lnkd.in/eK2H-Yid

The chapter Safeguarding Space, highlights a strategy called the Job-Crafting Action Plan, which can assist mid-career faculty with safeguarding their professional priorities following the awarding of tenure. Grounded in the work of Berg and colleagues, job crafting consists of three key elements: task crafting (aligning roles/responsibilities with priorities), relational crafting (seeking out effective partnerships), and cognitive crafting (altering one’s mindset in productive ways). The Job-Crafting Action Plan guides participants through a series of reflective prompts on priorities and actionable steps. An example of an associate professor’s action plan is provided. #highereducation #professionaldevelopment #academia
Last year, I had the opportunity to collaborate on a chapter in "A Toolkit for Mid-Career Academics" titled Safeguarding Space: A Job-Crafting Action Plan That Elevates Mid-Career Priorities, with Aimee LaPointe Terosky. Thank you for this opportunity, Dr. Terosky. You can read more here.

📣 A Level Results Day For those considering higher education, university isn't the only pathway forward. 💬️ James Kelly, co-founder and CEO of #Corndel, says in today's A-Level coverage: "Degree apprenticeships offer a compelling alternative to traditional degree programmes, as they bridge the gap between higher education and the working world. In today's economic climate, it's no surprise that increasing numbers of students are seeking opportunities that enable them to build their work experience and professional workplace skills alongside their knowledge, while also earning a salary. We need more awareness and signposting to degree apprenticeship options for students during their school and college studies, rather than the traditional focus on university degree courses as the only option for post-18 education." Workforce Development is all about helping people see their future differently and creating a career pathway to help them get there.
Can I get a hallelujah and amen?! Intentional career exploration and coaching has to start early. Elementary school isn’t too soon, but if Tennessee could fund career counselors beginning in middle school, the impact would be tremendous. This article is correct, classroom teachers can’t do it all and staying current on BLS data isn’t realistic. But having sufficient career counselors in each school to meet with students 2-3 times a semester, who are up to date on the latest workforce trends, college and post high school education and can build intentional relationships with local chambers of commerce and employers, could make a huge difference in student outcomes and, in turn, workforce outcomes. And no one has to reinvent the wheel. Programs like YouScience and Junior Achievement USA have curriculum and resources to get the ball rolling for schools. #careerexploration #careercoaching #servestudents
Opinion: When we fail to talk about career exploration in schools, students pay the price

What Paul Fain / Work Shift doing so important, given rapid explosion of initiatives working to improve learn/work ecosystem, and the many orgs conducting this work. Learn & Work Ecosystem Library is trying to pull from Paul's amazing intel to put into a reference format and code to make available in open-access library. Does anyone know yet, given AI developments, where we'll find timely needed info in next few years? 'Aggregator info databases' likely important solutions to the overwhelm of websites with portions of info, some siloed, some with paywalls, few with synthesis. Kudos to Work Shift for pulling in important content many of us don't know about and sharing openly!
The ed+work beat is a busy one. To help you keep up, Work Shift links away to as much source material as we can. In today's issue of The Job newsletter, I covered big moves by WGU and GaTech to reach more students—working learners, career changers, and K-12 students. We included 65 or so links, to help you go deeper on the topics I covered and for the piece to serve as a resource. Subscribe to The Job to get agenda-free, information-packed journalism in your inbox every week.
