To keep up with Maine's aging infrastructure, the Department of Transportation unveiled its new $4.74 billion dollar "Work Force Plan" for the upcoming three years. With the available funding, close to 60 percent will go towards major bridge and highway investments from now through 2026. In addition, an expansive list of state-wide transportation operations will also benefit, from aviation, railway, ferry, and public transit projects. To build up surrounding businesses, close to $165 million is expected to reach marine infrastructure such as the International Marine Terminal in Portland. Read it at NEWS CENTER Maine at https://lnkd.in/d8Wag5tq. Structural design is the core of our business. Our experienced structural engineers are ready to give your vision life with ingenuity and know-how. No project is too complex for us, and we have experience in a wide range of structures, including bridges, bulkheads, pump stations, tunnels, and other projects above ground and below. Innovative engineering solutions to protect bridges are here! 🌉🚢 On March 26, 2024, the serene waters near the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore turned chaotic as the MV Dali, a colossal cargo ship, collided with the bridge, leading to a section of it collapsing. This incident brings to light the critical issue of safeguarding bridges against ship collisions, prompting discussions on preventive measures and structural resilience. ➡️ Ship-bridge collisions, while rare, have left their mark in history. According to University of Michigan civil engineer Sherif El-Tawil, there have been approximately 40 recorded instances of such collisions in the past 65 years worldwide. El-Tawil sheds light on the mandated protocols for new bridge constructions and their adequacy in confronting modern behemoth cargo ships. He emphasises the necessity of designing structures capable of withstanding colossal forces, citing the impact force of the MV Dali estimated at a staggering 30 million pounds. ✅ To withstand such forces, innovative designs such as cable-stayed bridges with robust towers become imperative. ✅ Beyond design innovations, El-Tawil emphasises the importance of mitigation strategies to minimise the impact of collisions. What is your opinion about it? Share your thoughts in the comments ✍️ #infrastructure #ships #transport

This photo of the Turkish Construction Engineering Society Building never gets old. After the devastating Turkey-Syria earthquakes reduced surrounding buildings to rubble, this was one of the few buildings left standing, a testament to the importance of capable and responsible engineering and construction. After an earthquake, engineers are some of the most important people around. Their ability to operate is vital: to assess damage, advise on safety, and eventually how to rebuild. You'd hope that our engineers are located in the most earthquake-resilient buildings in town. Kudos to Canadian structural engineers Fast + Epp for investing in next-level seismic protection for their Headquarters in Vancouver. When the big one hits, their office will not only be standing, it will be usable more or less immediately. Meaning in a crisis Fast+Epp's engineers could return to their offices and be fully productive in their vital work on behalf of the city and its people.
