World Braille Day on January 4 is celebrated to honor the birth of Braille’s inventor, Louis Braille. Braille’s gift to the world has brightened the lives of millions of people around the world who are blind or visually impaired, and they benefit from his work every day. The day also acknowledges that those with visual impairments deserve the same standard of human rights as everyone else. Background Eye conditions are remarkably common. The World Health Organization estimates that globally, at least 1 billion people have a near or distance vision impairment that could have been prevented or has yet to be addressed. The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, adopted in 2006, has advanced the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. The Convention considers Braille essential for education, freedom of expression and opinion, access to information and social inclusion. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted in 2015, further pledges that no one will be left behind in the aim to ensure that all human beings can enjoy prosperous and fulfilling lives. WORLD BRAILLE DAY Celebrated since 2019, this event raises awareness of the importance of Braille as a means of communication in the full realisation of the human rights for blind and partially-sighted people. Braille is essential in the context of education, freedom of expression and opinion, as well as social inclusion, as reflected in article 2 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Braille is a tactile representation of alphabetic and numerical symbols using six dots to represent each letter and number, and even musical, mathematical and scientific symbols. Braille (named after its inventor in 19th century France, Louis Braille) is used by blind and partially-sighted people to read the same books and periodicals as those printed in a visual font. The World Health Organisation estimates that globally, at least 1 billion people have a near or distance vision impairment that could have been prevented or has yet to be addressed. Persons with vision impairment are more likely than those without to experience higher rates of poverty and disadvantage. Not meeting their needs, or fulfilling their rights, has wide-reaching consequences: vision loss often represents a lifetime of inequality, poorer health, and barriers to education and employment. World Braille Day is observed on the Fourth of January every year. World Braille Day, celebrated since 2019, is observed to raise awareness of the importance of Braille as a means of communication in the full realization of the human rights of blind and partially sighted people. The theme for World Braille Day 2024 is “Empowering Through Inclusion and Diversity,” which underscores the commitment to creating a world where individuals with visual impairments are not only recognised but fully included in all aspects of society. Braille is a tactile representation of alphabetic and numerical symbols using six dots to represent each letter and number, and even musical, mathematical and scientific symbols. Braille is crucial in Disability-inclusive Climate Action (from Early Warning System to Climate Change Literacy and beyond) to ensure we 'Leave No One Behind' and achieve Disability-inclusive Climate Justice. On World Braille Day, The Sangyan, as part of its Build Forward Better Campaign, brings to you inclusive content in tactile format to fill the knowledge gap and highlight that persons with disabilities are disproportionately impacted by climate change and can be equal partners in our fight against climate change as fighting inequalities is considered the best way to provide effective and lasting protection from climate chaos. Though Pride Month is meant to be a celebratory month, we would be remiss if we didn't hold space for the constant threats to BIPOC queer lives in this country and in our sport. With that said, awareness is not enough–we need action! Here's a list of some actionable items you can take: 📌 Ask questions, and do your own research. 📌 Recognize your privilege and use it for good. 📌 Take your online activism into real-life scenarios. 📌 Speak up for the underrepresented. 📌 Follow the lead of your LGBTQIA+ peers and organizations. We also encourage you to take time to facilitate meaningful conversations about making the running industry and run communities safer and more inclusive for BIPOC queer runners. And, check out this RIDC blog post that highlights historic LGBTQIA+ figures. ➡️ https://loom.ly/pw1fX4I #PrideMonth #Running4Diversity

Bring it on! I’ve dealt with skeptics and naysayers before. Together, we will continue to achieve what others say is impossible. Thanks for sharing this article from GearJunkie, Mark.
I'm giddy with excitement to see how political propaganda media outlets attack this candidate, and the creative ways they'll proudly display or slyly try to disguise their misogyny, sexism, labeling, name-calling, and innuendos. You can learn a lot about creating factually accurate content and doing ethical marketing by seeing how it can be misused by the unscrupulous. Most if not all of the criticism will be coming from politicians and their media spokespeople who couldn't dream of achieving a fraction of what Caroline Gleich has already accomplished in life, and then that criticism will be amplified by their audience. I imagine her candidacy will be the source of faux outrage and the subject of baseless mockery du jour for some time on numerous media outlets and in politicians' press releases and social media posts. Grab the popcorn and get ready for the ridiculous and petty criticisms that are about to come this very accomplished candidate's way. #environmentalstewardship #environmentalactivism #climatepolicy #conservation #equality #dei #diversityequityinclusion #ussenate

On World Braille Day, we celebrate more than Louis Braille and his ingenious creation; we honor a legacy of empowerment and accessibility. Arising from a childhood accident, Louis transformed his blindness into a beacon of hope for millions. Louis Braille was born on 4th January 1809 in France and at 15, he crafted a system from Charles Barbier's night writing, giving birth to braille, a language of dots that opened worlds for the visually impaired. Today, we also acknowledge a hard truth: the journey toward full accessibility is ongoing. Even after so long, many everyday places still lack braille, limiting independence and choice for those who are blind or visually impaired. This day isn't just about celebrating an invention; it's about advocating for a world that values inclusivity as its core value. This World Braille Day, let's remember Louis Braille's vision: a world where accessibility is considered everywhere and where every touch tells a story of independence and empowerment. Join us in celebrating and advancing this vision, making our world more inclusive, one dot at a time. #Inclusivity #A11y #Disability #Braille #Signs
