𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗹𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗲’𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆? Wet weather can have a significant impact on mining productivity due to the formation of slippery conditions on haul roads. When it rains, haul roads can become saturated with water, leading to flooding, road surface washouts, and the creation of mud and potholes. This makes it very difficult and dangerous for haul trucks to navigate the road network. What do you think the driver should do in this case? Where does the dirt go when we mine? Nope, it doesn't just vanish! In Alaska, mines are REQUIRED to minimize impact on the land and water and rehabilitate the site to a stable condition as quickly as possible. This takes a lot of planning and includes saving the dirt for revegetating with native seeds and plants that will restore the natural habitat. Rather misses the point.. China also installs more renewables each year than the rest of the world out together. The key point is to stop burning coal/oil/gas/peat etc.. (and wood, biomass, RDF to that matter) as we must not add to CO2e levels. This will stop global warming from accelerating. We then have to remove a lot of the current CO2e to cool the ecosphere.

In case you missed this senate hearing those of you engaged in the mining industry should find this entertaining. See https://lnkd.in/gmc9bnpd Senator Malcolm Roberts (a mining engineer and past mine manager) adeptly grills the Snowy 2.0 CEO Denis Barnes on the massive capital cost blow out from A$6 billion to its now projected cost of A$12 billion. See https://lnkd.in/g2Jt5gBc Malcolm Roberts suggests perhaps a few more close spaced holes might have helped to better understand the geology given the cause of the cost blowout blamed on geological variability. This is very much along the lines of my favorite mantra that "a gram of drilling is worth a kilogram of geological interpretation". However, the excuse given that "there was A$100 million spent on the geological survey" and "at some point you need to make a risk based based decision". Nice lessons here on risk reduction by front end loading in geology modelling with more funding and time for drilling likely avoiding costly surprises on what would otherwise be a failed project, if not for the apparent bottomless pockets of the Australian taxpayers.
