Here is a great article from the The Wall Street Journal on the plight of the hardwood industry in Appalachia and the US in general.

Big trees + blue paint = pending timber sale. A century of fire suppression in the Southern Appalachians, along with some well-intentioned reforestation in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, has resulted in an overabundance of Pinus strobus (Eastern white pine) on sites that should be anything but. A group of us were in the field today, discussing how to engage state and private partnerships to cut the white pines, kill most of the non mast-producing hardwood sprouts, do site prep burns, and plant shortleaf pine, which should steer this area back within the natural range of historic variation - less an elk here, mountain lion and woods bison there, of course.

LeDuc Montgomery LLC is pleased to represent the Legacy Forest Defense Coalition and North Cascades Conservation Council in litigation to halt the Washington State Department of Natural Resources "Stilly Revisited" timber sale of mature, structurally complex legacy forests - located just 2 miles downstream of the catastrophic 2014 Oso Landslide. LFDC's press release notes "On March 22, 2014, the Oso landslide sent a torrent of mud and debris into the Stillaguamish River valley, killing 43 people and destroying 49 homes. DNR paid $50 million to settle resulting lawsuits, which alleged that actions on state land and nearby logging caused an increase in runoff above the slide that led to the tragedy. The Stilly Revisited Timber Sale is located only two miles from the Oso landslide, on the same side of the river, and on both higher and steeper ground. A major landslide here could send an even larger torrent of mud and debris into the river valley, potentially damming the river, flooding and/or burying a portion of the valley, and threatening lives and properties located adjacent to and across the river. Yet DNR does not even mention the Oso landslide in its geologist's report, SEPA checklist, or Forest Practices Application for the Stilly Revisited Timber Sale, or give any consideration of the similarities between the two sites, or the role that timber harvest played in causing the landslide near Oso." Despite the risks, DNR has proceeded with plans that could further destabilize steep slopes on the north side of the river valley, and pose a new threat to the lives and properties of local residents. #forestdefense #legacyforest https://lnkd.in/gSTq2yjD

Today for lab we got to walk some of the Codorus Creek with Buchart Horn. They are redesigning the creek corridor through downtown York. I learned about how they plan to design the channel, widening it in some places, expanding bridges and removing dams. I learned that the low head dam in the creek was meant to create a flat bottomed boat basin, that kayakers, pontoon boats, etc. could use. Buchart Horn asked around and determined that people did not actually use the basin to boat and made the decision that they would like to remove the low head dam, as long as the Army Core agrees. This will make the creek safer as it is no longer creating a dangerous whirlpool like current, which is a large factor in drownings. I also learned that the Army Core does not allow vegetation along the sides of the creek, they spray it with vegetation killer often to prevent growth. This is so they can spot failure without having to walk all over the sides, it is more visible without vegetation. This connects to what we are learning in class because we have been taught that vegetation is good, it helps to filter the water as it reaches and flows through it. It also stops sediment from returning to the water and thus allows for easier clean up of it. Pictured below is an example of a side on part of the Codorus Creek that has large rocks lining the side instead of vegetation.

Soft maple is another species that we see from time to time. Soft maple is similar to Poplar in appearance and ability to take paint and stain. Soft maple is not necessarily its own species, but is a commercial term to denote it as separate from hard maple (often big leaf maple in the western US and silver maple in the eastern US). Lumber length is similar to hard maple so longer lengths upwards of 10-12ft may take additional time to source. #carpentry #softmaple

In 2024, despite America's vast forests, we are now the top global importer of softwood lumber. Sawmills are disappearing at a rate of two per month, and the Forest Service has seen a 40% decrease in its workforce. It is crucial for state logging associations to share and pass on this MOU to their members. To make a real impact in treating more acres, preventing fires, and increasing wood products, the MOU must be effectively communicated and transformed into an Action Plan. 🇺🇸🌲 #americanloggers #strongertogether

Current evidence summary There is a tendency for recurrent episodes of pancreatitis without prompt cholecystectomy.14 The small stone size and the transient nature of the obstruction make associated cholangitis rare.12-14 Thus, ERCP is rarely needed in the absence of persistent biliary obstruction.15,16 There is value in assessing the severity of pancreatitis at admission to help evaluate prognosis and guide management, including the timing of cholecystectomy. Severe pancreatitis generally declares itself within 24-48 hours. Given that no scoring system has shown consistent superiority or inferiority, the choice of which to use can be based on clinician preference.17-22 Aggressive fluid hydration is unnecessary and may be detrimental.23-25 In patients with mild pancreatitis, cholecystectomy should be performed during the index hospitalization.27-30 Several randomized clinical trials support cholecystectomy within 48 hours of admission.35-37,39-42 Prior to proceeding, a reevaluation of the patient 12 hours after admission may be of benefit.38 For patients with severe pancreatitis, cholecystectomy should be delayed, although the length of delay is uncertain.35,43-48 For those with moderately severe pancreatitis, further studies are needed to determine optimal timing of surgery. Early preoperative ERCP is indicated when concomitant cholangitis is suspected or in the presence of obstructive jaundice (total bilirubin level, >4 mg/dL). In the absence of these indications, the benefit of preoperative ERCP is uncertain.16,52-55 Although persisting CBD stones can be identified by trending laboratory results and/or MRCP, using these strategies may delay definitive care and increase the use of unnecessary preoperative ERCP.56,57,62 Performing an IOC instead may shorten hospital stay.58,61 Further studies are needed to determine whether routine IOC is necessary in patients with mild gallstone pancreatitis and normalizing bilirubin level.70-74
