The #1 way to pass tests, progress in classes, and graduate on time is to come to school every day. 67% of course failures are due to absences. 2. Families don't necessarily know that attendance is firmly linked to graduating, nor do they always know how to get a reluctant child to school. Take a positive, education-forward stance by sharing tips, resources, and contact info to help home adults support their students to come to school. It's not a one and done; it's got to be like a drumbeat. 3. Publicly celebrate wins and progress, by class, by grade, by building, even by individual student. Proactive and personalized outreach to different groups of students (especially your admitted pool) needs to be a DAILY thing. 2. Let families know it's ok to set limits around staying home from school (for example, "You don't have a fever? Sorry, you need to go to school!" 3. Let families know what support systems you have in place for students who are reluctant to come to school & how to access those supports 4. When we are called mentors I find it disrespectful. Reason being, is when people think mentors. More often than not, they think get some black individuals who simply relate to the young people and that should calm them down. Yes cultural understanding is important. But it wholly degrades what goes into our work and intervention. Relatability is just a part of a puzzle. And if we only ever rely on those with lived experience we will be stuck in the same cycle. Does that mean we are saying a middle-aged, middle class white teacher won’t ever be able to get deprived pupils to engage in education. Of course not. It’s nonsense. So therefore we must rely on much more. Our research, our theories, our methods and methodologies. As a team we work tirelessly to understand the background of education. Understand the ways young people can learn. In short we too are educators. And the relatability is just an added bonus.
