Do entrepreneurs allow their employees time to unplug? How do small business owners balance offering flexibility while ensuring their team feels comfortable taking time off? Balancing the pros and cons of working for large companies vs. small businesses is essential. While large companies might provide more structured time off policies, small businesses offer unique flexibility in day-to-day operations, like work-from-home options and, in some cases, unlimited PTO (as long as goals are met). However, a challenge in small businesses is the blurred line between work and personal life, especially when team members have regular face-to-face time with the owner or CEO. It’s crucial for small business owners to set clear boundaries to ensure employees feel comfortable fully unplugging during their time off.
Are workers at larger companies better at unplugging from work? For many, staying reachable even when off the clock is a workplace norm — more than half of U.S. workers say they still check in with colleagues during planned time off. But employees at larger U.S. companies are more likely to be planning an upcoming vacation than other workers — and less likely to feel guilty about taking it, according to the findings of LinkedIn’s latest Workforce Confidence survey. What’s more? Employees of large companies (with over 1,000 employees) are also least likely to check in with work while on vacation: 53% said they continue to check in, compared to 62% of mid-sized company employees (those with 201-1,000 employees) and 63% of small business workers (with under 200 employees). Having a larger employer may correlate with a willingness to unplug from work, but that doesn’t mean enterprise employees are less stressed. Previous survey results show that workers at larger companies are more likely to report feeling stuck in their jobs and burned out than their peers at smaller companies — which could be reasons to take time off.
