After spending the second day participating in the ADIPEC Exhibition and Conference and engaging in multiple conversations with both #EnergyLeaders and #TechnologySuppliers, I felt the need to bring some light to the topic of #GreenSteel and how it might affect the #EnergyTransition There is no doubt that the introduction of H2-based DRI technology is an important step in industry. This is an alternative process to using coke, requiring hydrogen, which can be produced through electrolysis and used as a reductant agent. The process could have great relevance in emission reduction in terms of CO2 within a steel production cycle. Coupling the H2-DRI process with Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF) is a cleaner alternative to traditional steelmaking because such a process can cut down carbon emissions and carbon intensity. Stakeholders are demanding transparency and decarbonization of supply chains, which change the market dynamic focused on #ESG frameworks. For example, the biggest consumers of steel—like automotive and construction—set up ambition carbon reduction and #NetZero targets, making a compelling case to adopt H2-DRI technology in the midterm. #GreenSteel #Sustainability #Innovation #Decarbonization #H2DRI #RenewableEnergy #SteelIndustry #ClimateAction

𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗹: 𝟭𝟬 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 by Douglas Main; MIT Technology Review Making #steel produces a lot of #greenhousegas emissions. Now, construction is underway in #Sweden on an industrial-scale #plant that will emit almost zero carbon dioxide. WHO: Boston Metal, LKAB, Midrex Technologies, Inc., Stegra WHEN: 1 year A method for using #hydrogen made with #renewable power to produce steel could help clean up the #industry, which accounts for about 8% of the world’s #carbonemissions. Most steel is still made in #coal-based #blastfurnaces that churn out about two tons of #carbondioxide or more for every ton of steel. A newer commercial technique called direct reduction (#DRI), which uses #naturalgas to turn #ironore into #iron (a key ingredient in steel), yields about a 40% reduction in emissions. But that’s still a lot of carbon pollution. So several companies are developing ways to use hydrogen made with renewable #power to react with iron ore to make iron—the most energy-intensive and dirtiest step of the #steelmaking process. Funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, SIDERWIN has developed a pioneering CO2-free steel production process through electrowinning. 🔧 Key Achievements: >>>>87% Reduction in CO2 Emissions: Our innovative process significantly cuts down direct CO2 emissions compared to traditional steelmaking methods. >>>>31% Reduction in Energy Use: By integrating renewable energy sources, we’ve made the process more energy-efficient. >>>>Utilization of By-products: The ability to produce steel from iron-rich by-products of non-ferrous metallurgy residues. >>>>Flexible and Sustainable: The process is adaptable and can be powered by renewable energies, making it a sustainable solution for the future. #HYBRIT 3EU #greensteel #greenenergy #decarbonisation #fossilfree #sustainability #GHGEMISSIONS #carbondioxide #greenhydrogen With EU funding, the HYBRIT Demonstration project will produce some 1.3 million tons of fossil-free steel per year, or around a quarter of Sweden’s total steel output. As such, the project has the potential to prevent more than 14 million tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere in its first ten years of operation. Now, the team aims to produce iron using hydrogen as the reducing agent and leaving water vapour as a by-product. To replace traditional furnaces, the Innovation Fund will support the construction of a first-of-a kind hydrogen-driven facility for iron production in Gällivare, Sweden.
