China’s stockpile agency (NFSRA, which overlooks the SRB) is reportedly buying a further 15,000 MT of cobalt metal at record low prices after they have killed the market over the past 2 years. This is on top of recent purchases of another 15,000 MT. Cobalt is essential to China’s military prowess and its low-cost EVs. Cobalt metal is for the former. 🗞️The Diplomat https://lnkd.in/gYZ65ChB #Stockpiles #JRV #Jervois #China #cobalt #Stockpile

China's dominance across critical #metals is one of the main bottlenecks on the path to #energytransition. This isn't news, as China has been building its portfolio across the transition metals (as well as the broader value chain) for over a decade - that's essentially where and when the mass roll-out of #EVs originally started. This will be a difficult one to walk back without full-on trade barriers and an uptick in prices for the metals produced outside of Chinese influence. #mining #industrial #strategy #investing #globaltrade #commoditytrading #lithium #batteries
In the first of a three-part series based on more than 40 interviews with industry executives, officials and politicians, Bloomberg has looked at Western efforts to create an alternative, China-free, global metals supply chain. Yet Beijing’s dominance remains unshaken. Tangible results from US efforts have so far been limited, and executives at some of the world's biggest mining companies have reported frustration at what they view as a lack of a coherent strategy on critical minerals supply. In the mid-1990s, the US government had more than 20,000 tons of cobalt in stock, enough to meet the entire domestic needs of the US for three years, according to Defense Department records. But when its budget was cut, cobalt was one of the first metals the DLA sold to balance its books—to the bemusement of traders who bought its reserves and sold them to a booming aerospace sector. “Twenty years ago, I told the director of the DLA: ‘We’re buying all this cobalt from you; at some point we’ll be selling it back to you,’” says Mark Kristoff, CEO of specialist metals trading house Traxys SA. “Now governments are waking up.” Mark Burton Joseph Deaux Michael Kavanagh Jennifer Dlouhy Annie Lee #metals #China #criticalminerals #EVs #cobalt https://lnkd.in/ea_GguWw

When we started WIA, we set out to bring attention to the energy stories that aren’t getting enough attention. This is one of them. China controls the supply chain for critical minerals, or rare earth minerals, needed for not only electrification, but also for national security. The U.S. Military needs critical minerals for its advanced weapons systems, which means, it depends on China to provide them. That’s a problem, and not enough people are talking about it. Watch our new video explaining the situation, and let’s start the conversation. https://lnkd.in/e-qZjh5k

Maybe we should just ramp up production and sell more dual-use strategic materials at bargain basement prices ? How else are we going to be able to afford to pay for all our new Defence equipment…that we need to protect ourselves from the unprecedented regional military build up, fueled by our sale of dual-use strategic materials ?

Are external powers once again fostering divisions in Africa to serve their own interests, while we remain oblivious to their tactics? We must resist these external influences and reconnect with our roots. It's essential to halt the practice of surrendering our valuable resources for fleeting influence. It's disheartening to see our continent relinquishing its assets to foreign entities in exchange for military power, as evidenced by Russia's so-called African Legion, which is infiltrating nations and seizing control of resources in return for military support. https://lnkd.in/dp9JuB6V

US Moves to Restore Stockpiling ‘Panic Button’ in EV Metals Fight with China Washington’s efforts have so far had limited success, and some mining executives complain of a lack of coherent strategy at a time when metal prices are falling. By Mark Burton, Joe Deaux, Michael J Kavanagh, Jennifer A Dlouhy, and Annie Lee February 20, 2024 at 5:31 AM GMT+5:30 Insiders liken it to a “panic button.” And for more than 80 years, the primary job of the National Defense Stockpile has been to keep the US military supplied with essential raw materials and protect against supply shocks. So when China surprised the markets by restricting exports of two niche industrial metals last year, top-level officials in the Pentagon-controlled agency—and the White House—faced an uncomfortable reality: Its panic button no longer worked. The realization triggered a different kind of alarm in Washington.

Exciting developments in North American resource security! 🌍 The U.S. funding Canadian mining projects for critical minerals marks a strategic shift to enhance supply chain resilience and reduce dependency on foreign sources. This historic move underscores a joint effort to bolster national security and strengthen regional control of vital resources. 💎🇺🇸🇨🇦 #ResourceSecurity #USCanadaPartnership
The U.S. military has, for the first time in generations, spent public money on minerals projects inside Canada: nearly $15 million to mine and process copper, gold, graphite and cobalt in Quebec and the Northwest Territories. It might not be the last: Officials expect additional cross-border announcements under the more than half-billion-dollar U.S. program (U.S. Defense Production Act). Part of an effort to address #China's control over global supply chains in the #CriticalMinerals and build #ResilientSupplyChains #China #Canada

Barrick Gold Corp. ABX-T ⬇️-0.16% is facing mounting pressure in Mali as the country’s military regime seeks to boost its control of the multibillion-dollar mining sector at a time of growing Russian influence over its economy. The Malian government is closely allied with the Russian military, which provides thousands of soldiers to several countries in the region. Russian troops have been heavily involved in seizing mining sites in Mali and the Central African Republic in recent years, and the U.S. government has accused Russia of using African mining revenue to help finance its global military operations. https://lnkd.in/emgwzz5u
