I had a wonderful conversation yesterday with a recruiter looking for insights from people who have recently landed a new job: what was their search like? What struggles did they encounter? What was new or different compared to previous job searches? I mentioned that I often had the option to choose whether or not AI would screen my application. This blew her mind. As a recruiter and HR talent acquisition specialist who had been in the industry for … a while … she had never heard of this. I told her it’s increasingly common, and probably why so many applicants who seem great for a role aren’t even getting a screening interview. For me, I initially started with one version of my resume and didn’t get much response. Then I revised my resume and loaded it up with ALL the industry buzzwords. I didn’t change my experience or accomplishments, I just reworded them. And then I started getting interviews. Bottom line: AI is now involved with the hiring process. Don’t be ashamed of using buzzwords, because that can make the difference between an interview and being ghosted.

I was speaking with a fellow recruiter today about how the recruitment industry has evolved significantly in the recent years. We both agreed that with AI making waves companies are no longer interested in candidates who only showcase their technical skills through the hiring process. The belief that only a strong technical interview guarantees you an offer is somewhat outdated. While excelling in a technical interview can improve your chances, it does not ensure an offer. Companies today value more than just technical skills; they look for depth and cultural alignment. It’s not uncommon for a less technically proficient candidate to be chosen over a stronger one simply because they were more engaging, enthusiastic, and deemed a better cultural fit. Therefore, engage actively during HR calls, ask relevant questions, and develop a holistic interview strategy. Will AI replace the traditional resume? There seems to be more and more video content and people embracing video calls and interactions. I know this is not a revelation and it’s been happening for a while but I wonder how it translates into recruitment. I can see us evolving beyond the traditional resume and job application process and into an opportunity for people to interact with AI and apply for jobs in a new way. I wonder if it will make it easier for people to land interviews because their application involves not only their experience on paper but also an assessment of their personality and character traits?
