Last week I got the question what have you been up to since Built by Nature. 🚀 Bringing together and leading a group of A-players to submit the Convivial City project for the New European Bauhaus Call: new governance models for the co-design and co-construction of public spaces in neighbourhoods by communities. Will we receive it? Will hear more in January and in the meantime crossing our fingers as we all know, many submissions and only 2 grants. ♻️ Leading comms for CircuLaw, a platform that shows local governments how to accelerate the circular transition. The circular economy is absolutely essential! The use of raw materials around the world causes 90% of the global loss of biodiversity, 90% of the world’s water shortage, and 50% of greenhouse gas emissions. We cannot achieve the climate goals if we do not have a circular economy. And it will also make us less dependent on other countries for the supply of raw materials. 🌆 Strategy and business development Studio for New Realities, a studio for strategic urban development and architecture which aims at maximising quality of life to create a new reality that is more humane, healthier and more responsible. Let's talk if you feel you can use some catalyst magic!

"Digital twins will help planners make urban areas more liveable, accessible, efficient and resilient. Soon we will even have digital twins of entire countries. Tuvalu in Polynesia, Germany, Singapore and Greece are all racing to build these. They will facilitate better planning and decision-making, especially when developing sustainable solutions for complex problems.” Read the entire Sustainability Magazine article on opportunities of digital twins for sustainability, featuring Eva Carranza, head of sustainability at Hexagon AB. Sustainability should be more than just metrics 📊 🙄 It should be an attitude. We face the greatest challenge in the history of humanity 🤠 This is clearly not a game. This is not green capitalism 🤑 So everyone must do their part, what they do best. And there is room for everyone, with a focus on collaboration, not competition 🥊 We have to be humble and understand that this is everyone's business. Now, there are many disciplines making a «boom» 💥 🤖 Artificial Intelligence ♻️ Circular Design And there seems to be a race to get there first and occupy a space. My question is: What space and why do we think it deserves to be ours? Agree? ✊🏼 #sustainability #future #collaboration

I always get energy from ground-breaking innovation. That’s why I went to visit TU Delft last week: to learn about new innovative projects set up by young and bright people. I received an extensive overview of the innovative climate research that is taking place there. I visited the Dream Hall, where student-led teams come together to create, build, and test state-of-the-art projects, such as the ‘Ecorunner’ and a fully functioning exoskeleton for people with paraplegia. Afterwards, I visited the Green Village, an EU funded field-lab for sustainable urban living. Researchers presented insightful ideas on sewage monitoring, climate governance and the university’s new and unique geothermal well. Several technical start-ups also pitched great sustainable business-cases. One of the projects that definitively stood out was the ‘Ecorunner’. This is a team, completely consisting of devoted students, that builds a hyper-efficient hydrogen car in the Dream Hall every year. Last year they broke a world record, driving a mind-blowing 2488 km on 950 grams of hydrogen. This year, they are taking things one step further by creating a street-legal vehicle and trying to set a world record by driving the 'Elfstedentocht' ten times on one hydrogen tank. Truly inspiring to see these student teams spend their time on such innovative projects. A second element that inspired me is the start-up culture in Delft, which is accelerated by incubator YES!Delft. Start-ups play a vital role in bringing green solutions to you and me, by transforming ideas on paper to marketable products. I listened to many great ideas, one of which is Villari. They developed a novel system for detecting cracks in steel at an earlier stage. We see a lot of fatigue-related damage in our steel infrastructure, especially bridges. This solution can increase the longevity of steel infrastructure, potentially having a huge impact on infrastructure costs. This is a great example of the entrepreneurial mindset that is needed for the green transition.

Recently I spoke at the 13th World Cities Summit Mayors Forum in Singapore. This summit was attended by more than 80 mayors and leaders from around the world. The theme of the 2024 Summit was around Liveable and Sustainable Cities: Rejuvenate, Reinvent, Reimagine. One of the key issues facing all Mayors worldwide is dealing with climate change. It was very interesting to listen to how other cities are tackling their issues – some very similar to the issues we face. There was lots of learnings about how to do things better and some great connections were made. Here are some of the key points I made in my speech at the Summit: · While Christchurch is a small city compared to many of those represented at the Summit, we have a big ambition - to be a regenerative city, that’s fit for the challenging future we all face. · We have developed a fresh economic strategy for the city. This is the Christchurch Economic Ambition. It calls for the city to work together to grow our economy in ways that are good for business, people and the planet. · We want a future that’s based on a regenerative economy – where more carbon is eliminated than produced, and there’s a focus on reusing, repairing and repurposing materials, rather than taking, making and disposing of them. · Our economic ambition of a regenerative economy is not one that will be reached in one generation, but it is the direction that we must travel as a city.

This should be done in large scale/ community scale to provide dignified and cheap living conditions/ spaces for large number of people. Materials are almost free with little to almost zero cost. The most important part of the puzzle will be the Architecture and design. If big Architectural firms and Engineers will provide the guidance/ plan and direct the execution. The end result will be magnificent.

🌿Forward Thinking Friday: Navigating the Future of Sustainable Cities 🌍 Imagine it’s the year 2030, and you're leading an ambitious project to transform an emerging city into a beacon of sustainability. You’ve been tasked with integrating sustainable energy solutions that will shape the future of this city—and the choices you make today will impact not only the environment but the lives of thousands of people. ➡️ You have — three major pathways — ahead of you. Each choice comes with its own challenges and opportunities, and what you decide could set the tone for urban development for decades to come. Which path would you choose? 1️⃣ Invest in cutting-edge green technology** that hasn’t been tested on this scale yet. The potential is massive, but so is the risk. 2️⃣ Focus on educating and empowering the local community first**, ensuring that they understand and support the changes being made. It might slow things down initially but could foster long-term sustainable growth. 3️⃣ Partner with established corporations already working in sustainable energy**. This would bring in proven expertise and resources but might require compromising on certain values. ➡️ Why did you choose your option? 🌟 In what ways do you think your choice would shape the future of this city? Let’s dive into how each approach could impact the balance between people, planet, and profit as we look ahead to 2030 and beyond. 🌀 Comment below with your thoughts—I’d love to hear your insights on the future of sustainable cities! 💬 #ForwardThinkingFriday #Sustainability #Leadership #GreenTech #UrbanDevelopment #InnovationForGood
