She had with renowned nutrition expert and food systems leader Prof Ruth Oniango to demonstrate not only the power of leadership but partnership and mentorship in skilling future generations to own the vision of healthy, inclusive and sustainable food systems in Africa. 🌍 Empowering Regional Solutions for Global Challenges: CALA Alumni Leading the Way🌍 As the world continues to grapple with food security challenges, we must recognize the power of regional approaches in driving scalable, impactful solutions. At the The Centre for African Leaders in Agriculture (CALA), we are proud to be at the forefront of fostering leadership across 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁, 𝗪𝗲𝘀𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 —where our alumni are making significant strides in addressing local food security challenges with a global outlook. From Kenya to Nigeria, Tanzania to Ghana, our leaders are transforming agricultural systems by leveraging their 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲 and 𝗖𝗔𝗟𝗔’𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸. Through 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴, hands-on learning, and a focus on action-driven results, CALA is helping bridge the gap between 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 and 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀. 🌱 𝗜𝗻 𝗧𝗮𝗻𝘇𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗮, CALA alumna Honest Mseri has supported women's cashew processors through a $700,000 initiative, boosting economic resilience in the Mtwara and Lindi regions.    🌾𝗜𝗻 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮, CALA leaders are advancing climate-smart agriculture, paving the way for sustainable food systems in West Africa.  🌍 Across the continent, 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗻𝗶 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 that regional solutions—grounded in local knowledge—are critical to tackling global food challenges. BFC’s Leadership Academy 2024 in Arusha, Tanzania 🇹🇿 From October 1st to 3rd, we concluded a 3-day event at the Beyond Farming Collective Leadership Academy 2024 in Tanzania, where leaders from Agri-Food Industry Organizations (AFIOs) gained new strategies in agriculture. We achieved significant milestones, including: 🌱 Developing Sustainable Business Models: The AFIOs explored actionable approaches to create commercially viable solutions that bring real impact to smallholder farmers. 💻 Advancing Digital Innovation: Leaders gained insights on how to harness technology to boost communication, streamline operations, and deliver real-time support to their members. 📢 Strengthening Advocacy: We crafted practical strategies to amplify the voices of AFIOs, enabling them to shape policies that reflect the needs of their communities. 🌍 Enhancing Governance & Growth: AFIOs were equipped with tools to implement strong governance structures, and explored opportunities like AfCFTA to access new markets and attract investment beyond traditional grants. #LeadershipAcademy2024 #AFIOs #Sustainability #Tanzania #BeyondFarmingCollective

These were the first lines of the email that ushered us into CALA in July 2022. Team Sage (5 of 10 Nigerian delegates) – that's us! – embarked on a truly transformative journey with the The Centre for African Leaders in Agriculture (CALA) through their Advanced Leadership Programme. This was not your typical classroom setting; CALA offered a dynamic, collaborative experience tailored for leaders like us actively implementing agricultural initiatives across the continent. The program was a vibrant mix of virtual and in-person learning events. We honed our leadership skills through practical exercises and discussions, but the real power came with the Action Learning Projects. These projects were not just theoretical, they tackled real-world challenges we faced in our own countries. With CALA's guidance, we received in-country coaching and participated in regular peer accountability sessions. It was a constant push and pull, refining our approaches and driving impactful results – all while building a solid network of inspiring cohorts across Africa. Sharing best practices and forging lifelong friendships with these fellow changemakers became invaluable resources as we navigated the complexities of African agriculture. Beyond the skills and connections, CALA provided unparalleled recognition. Graduates like us are positioned as delivery champions, granting access to prestigious AGRA platforms and events. This recognition has opened doors and also amplified our voices, empowering us to advocate for impactful agricultural policies. Our ALP project focused on the levels of export rejects we experienced in the Sesame seed sector. During the program, we developed the framework and tested the pilot successfully; now, we are poised to share this information with other relevant stakeholders because the issues of export rejection require a collaborative effort. The CALA Advanced Leadership Programme is an investment that continues to pay dividends. It is a springboard for leaders passionate about making a tangible difference in Africa's food systems. Leadership Role in Agriculture. In our previous leadership discussions, we dove into the steps for building essential leadership skills in Agri-Cooperative Management in Nigeria by emphasizing why networking matters. Today, we’re shifting our spotlight to a vital aspect of agriculture: Networking in Agriculture. Why Networking Matters in Agriculture Networking is the lifeblood of the agricultural sector, creating strong connections among farmers, researchers, and industry professionals. Here’s how effective networking can transform our agricultural landscape: 1. Knowledge Sharing: Imagine the wealth of experience and innovation that flows when farmers and researchers connect! Networking enables the exchange of best practices, cutting-edge technologies, and invaluable research findings, boosting crop yields, enhancing disease management, and optimizing resource use. 2. Access to Markets: Networking bridges the gap between farmers and potential buyers like processors and exporters. This connection opens doors to new markets, better pricing, and ultimately, greater income for farmers. The Centre for African Leaders in Agriculture’s (CALA) Advanced Leadership Programme is a collaborative, hands-on, and tailored experience for senior and rising leaders in Africa’s agriculture sector. Designed for individuals spearheading and directly implementing specific country-level agriculture initiatives, the programme is initially open to participants from eight countries. Eligibility: Leaders implementing country-level agriculture efforts: Established or emerging leaders working in government, private firms and associations, or civil society organizations who are responsible for driving agriculture flagships and priority programs. Must be actively employed or working in government (public sector), private sector and civil society (associations or civil society organizations) Cohorts will be formed from participants from the following countries: Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda.
