At #UNCCDCOP16, the private sector took a bold step towards tackling #LandDegradation with the Business4Land initiative, which emphasizes ESG strategies and sustainable investments. With sectors like finance, fashion and agriculture joining the effort, the power of innovation and collaboration is paving the way for real change.

In preparation for the #COP29, last year I had the honour to be invited by The World Bank Group to present during #COP28 in their panel on Sustainable Horizons in Latin America and the Caribbean: Unveiling Strategies for Climate-Resilient Development, where I shared the critical role of #innovation and #inclusion for a #sustainabledevelopment. Drawn on my experience, 20 years leading and advocating for innovation and inclusion, I emphasised how relevant the private and public sector engagement and collaboration are, especially for private sector #investment. The public sector, by being a first adopter, can help reduce risks and pave the way for private sector investment. It's crucial that we create an environment where SMEs, the backbone of our economies, can thrive. SMEs, which are actually part of the engine of our economy are keener to participate more in sustainability agenda with innovation. Acknowledging that they have a distinct way of being treated and they also have a more inclusive approach in the innovation, taking account of the communities. Now is the time for us to champion and create the conditions for local innovation capability. Because the global challenges are also local. Let’s work together to drive this transformation forward! Thank you Forética for hosting #ESGSpain2024 yesterday. A huge privilege to attend this Forum, which is the annual benchmark event in corporate sustainability in Spain. Outstanding programme and speakers, and I particularly enjoyed listening to Peter Bakker's reflections WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development. Six key takeaways that says it all for me: 1) the urgency of our undisputed poly-crisis is now visible and tangible everywhere, 2) we must collectively catalyse business action to implement transformative solutions at speed and scale, 3) climate change, nature loss and inequality need to be at the heart of business transformation, 4) the unprecedented pace of developments in ESG disclosure frameworks make mandatory reporting now inevitable, 5) the world has turned to business to unlock urgent sustainability solutions, and 6) future credibility and accountability will depend on what we put in motion day. #CSRD, #CSDDD, #ESG, #businesstransformation, #corporatesustainability. #Sustainability is BIG business ... but not always for the right reasons. ESG and sustainability have become #buzzwords and a massive business opportunity. While it's encouraging to see countries and companies prioritise environmental and social responsibility, it's important to challenge the motives behind these initiatives. ✔️ The Good: Genuine efforts towards sustainability can lead to significant positive impact, from reducing carbon footprints to social equity and better governance. ⚠️ The Not-So-Good: However, not all sustainability efforts are created equal. "Greenwashing" is undermining true progress. Committing to net-zero in 2040 is one thing, but what are the real actions being taken and how do we know which brands are sincere about it? 😱 The Ugly: Many argue that 300 Billion USD allocated for climate change after #COP29 is far insufficient. On the other hand, one might wonder how much of this money is going to disappear into the black hole of corruption. 💡 The Way Forward: As citizens, consumers, investors and business leaders, we must demand more than just green rhetoric.
