Women have been disproportionally affected by the mass layoffs in tech. The stats seem contradictory to that statement (45% compared to 55% of men), however, women hold only about a third of the jobs in tech. From a strictly economic perspective, more women = better business. Forbes reports that high-gender-diversity companies have outperformed, on average, less diverse companies over the past five years. So how do we fix this? For starters - we fix the pipeline. Girls Inc. of San Diego County recently wrapped up its inaugural summer of Eureka!, a 5 year intensive, hands-on STEM experience for rising 8th graders through high school seniors. These are the kinds of programs that will fix gender equality in tech and other STEM industries. But....these kinds of programs require funding. If you are committed to building a more equitable tech industry, I'd love for you to join me at Girls Inc. of San Diego County's annual fundraising event next Wednesday, September 20th, from 6 - 8 PM. What a great event tonight! Thanks Jessie (Kain) Lindstrom - wonderful venue and a great cause. I was very positively impacted by a STEM program in my high school and I am so appreciative of the chances and encouragement I had. Loved being there to support growth in our community.
