First of its kind: "The proposed Haida Nation Title agreement would recognize Haida Nation’s Aboriginal Title throughout Haida Gwaii" What does recognizing Aboriginal Title mean? "Recognizing Haida Aboriginal Title would mean provincial Crown land on Haida Gwaii (other than privately owned Crown land) is formally recognized as Haida Aboriginal Title lands. Over time, the Province and Haida Nation would negotiate agreements about how different aspects of governing that land shift to Haida Nation." The draft agreement is explicit: recognizing Aboriginal Title will not impact anyone’s private property, or local government jurisdiction, bylaws and local government lands on Haida Gwaii. Agreement scope If the agreement is approved, when it comes into effect, it would: • Recognize and affirm that Haida Nation has Aboriginal Title throughout all of Haida Gwaii • Enable Haida Nation and B.C. to determine how the two governments’ laws work together to guide decisions about land and resources on Haida Gwaii • Include a transition period where Haida Nation and the Province continue to use their existing shared decision-making bodies and processes, including the Solutions Table and Haida Gwaii Management Council, to make the necessary land and resource decisions • Enable Haida Nation and the Province to negotiate subsequent agreements that provide clarity for managing the land base to ensure the sustainability of Haida Gwaii for all residents and the generations to come. 🌞🌞🌞 A good and hopeful story. The Government of British Columbia recognizes Haida ownership of all the lands of Haida Gwaii. The article explains that, "this is the first time in Canadian history that the colonial government has recognized Indigenous title across an entire terrestrial territory, and it’s the first time this kind of recognition has occurred outside of the courts. Experts say it marks a new path toward Indigenous reconciliation." Twenty years before, the BC government had a very different take and offered a deal that would give the Haida - whose home it as been for 13'000 years - 20% of their lands if they agreed to give up 80% of their lands ... sounds nuts, right!? But it goes to show how much on the non-indigenous world still thinks about indigenous people. Luckily, the then President of the Council of the Haida Nation refused the deal, saying, “Why would we give up 80 percent of our land to get 20? This case is about respect for the Earth and each other. It is about culture, and it is about life.” Maybe, for a respectful way forward with nature, more and more governments should take this as an example. Frankly, I have far greater faith in indigenous people being respectful with nature than I do with our traditional expansionist economic models and mindsets. #rewilding #rewilderweekly

In April 2024, the Haida Nation and province of BC announced the Gaayhllxid/ Gíihlagalgang “Rising Tide” Haida Title Lands Agreement. In it, the BC government recognizes Haida ownership over all of Haida Gwaii. From the article: The new agreement will soon be enshrined into BC law, naming the Haida as the rightful owners of all 200-plus islands of Haida Gwaii, which they have been stewarding for millennia. After a two-year transition period, the Haida Nation will manage 98 percent of its archipelago which was formerly considered Crown land, including protected areas and other forested lands. Having more of a say over the logging industry—which has clear-cut over two-thirds of the islands’ old-growth forest since 1950—has been a focus of the Haida’s title fight since the very beginning. The agreement won’t affect private property or municipal and provincial services, from highways to hospitals, which will continue to be regulated by the province." #LandBack is an important movement to achieve justice for Indigenous communities. Unfortunately, there are few examples of Indigenous land being returned to its rightful stewards - until now "In April 2024, the Haida Nation and the province of British Columbia announced the Gaayhllxid/Gíihlagalgang “Rising Tide” Haida Title Lands Agreement. In it, the BC government formally recognizes Haida ownership of all the lands of Haida Gwaii. This is the first time in Canadian history that the colonial government has recognized Indigenous title across an entire terrestrial territory, and it’s the first time this kind of recognition has occurred outside of the courts." This news is a huge step towards Indigenous reconciliation. It is also a huge win for the conservation as "at least 22 percent of the world's Key Biodiversity Areas and at least 21 percent of the world's lands" are conserved by Indigenous peoples and local communities (IUCN). Cheers to this positive news. May we see this step act as a catalyst for similar action across other colonial jurisdictions.
