TLK news: Rich & Happy? 20th Sunday of Trinity 2024 In the Western world there is a growing trend of materialism, where it is increasingly believed that possessions are the key to securing happiness, and that a person’s merit and status can be judged by their material wealth and the quality and price of the goods they can buy. Research shows that recent generations are focusing more on money, image and fame than ever before. A survey conducted by the University of California found that college students main reason for attending college was now to enhance their wealth. But crucially, a series of studies have also found a link between materialism and unhappiness. Material wealth has little demonstrable impact on personal well-being and indeed can actively undermine our mental health with increasing levels of depression, narcissism and paranoia. But, however much we hear this, even if we believe it, it seems we still want the possessions anyway. School choice has been a controversial issue for many years now but has been embraced more often in recent years. The American tradition of supporting education for all originated as public education with Christian values. During the late 1700s and 1800s some families had financial, geographical, or other challenges in accessing education, and states and localities became invested in providing public education for all elementary and high school students. Currently, several states, including Ohio, have enacted legislation to provide vouchers for education for all families. If Ohio families believe that a non-public education may be more beneficial to their child, then they may choose that option. While parochial schools may admit students and families based on theological beliefs, any non-public school accepting vouchers may not discriminate based on race, income, or other social divisions. EdChoice Scholarships (vouchers) provide a fraction of the average cost of education in a public school. Notably, public schools receive federal, state, and local funding per student, while vouchers are funded by Ohio at a rate similar to Ohio’s contribution to public student education. Classical Christian Academy anticipates being an EdChoice Scholarship provider. For more information visit www.cca-shaker.org
