Chile is phasing out coal faster than any other developing nation thanks in part to regulations that bolstered environmental standards and gave investors the right signals, says former environment minister Marcelo Mena-Carrasco. In the first half of 2024, coal accounted for just 17.5% of Chile’s electricity output, data collated by research group Ember shows. That’s down from 43.6% in 2016. The dirtiest fossil fuel is being rapidly replaced by wind and solar, which are the cheapest sources of generating capacity. #Renewables, in aggregate, comprised 63.1% of Chile’s power mix in the first half of the year.

The UK Says Goodbye to Coal Power This week marks a historic milestone as the UK shuts down its last remaining coal-fired power station, the 2 GW Ratcliffe-on-Soar plant. From the world’s first coal-fired power station in London in 1882 to powering industries and homes for generations, coal played a vital role in shaping the modern economy. Though there’s a sense of nostalgia for those whose livelihoods were built around coal, there’s also a collective acceptance that it's time to move forward. #Turkey overtook #Germany to become Europe's largest producer of #coal-fired #electricity over the first four months of 2024, data from energy think tank Ember shows. The main driver of Turkey's ascendance in regional coal rankings was a steep drop in Germany's coal use during the January-April window, which was 32% lower than the same period in 2023 and the lowest for that time frame on record. If utilities in Germany and Poland make further cuts to coal use this year, 2024 may mark a turning point in Europe's #energytransition efforts by shifting emissions focus away from established industrial economies to regional emerging markets where coal remains a key power fuel.
