A NASA airborne instrument called AVIRIS was used to capture this false-color image of areas burned by the Eaton Fire in Altadena as of January 11, 2025. Burnt trees and buildings in developed areas appear brown; burned wildland areas are orange. The imaging spectrometer, developed at JPL, has been called on to help in many disasters over the past two decades. Now, it's being used to help in our own backyard. Thanks to the brave dedication of our first responders, JPL was untouched by the fire – but our community has a long recovery ahead. More on this image: go.nasa.gov/3CbCL28
I was a very little kid in Altadena. My dad was working at JPL. We were renting a house on Crestview Drive that looked right down on JPL. My mom would point it out and say "that's where daddy works!" I remember the Cheshire-Cat smile of the windows on the cafeteria building when they were all lit up at night.
The fire even made it all the way down to Charles White County Park. So sad.
Thank you for the images. These types of fires have huge impacts, beyond decontamination, rebuilding. Stay strong. Look to the north for guidance- we’ve been through it in 2017,2019 and 2020. When rebuilding, watch out for scalpers. They seem to come out of the woodwork. Secure contractors early. Fire insurance … well, we need to come up with a different solution. That’s our current struggle, first being our properties uninsurable or unaffordable, whether we were in a burned neighborhood or not. More than anything, stay strong as a community. It will help you pull through. Fundraising for the community, neighbors helping neighbors… best wishes and hugs. I’m glad JPL is safe, and thank you for the images.
Sir, 6G is uploading more data on a single wave by using better modulation device or choosing higher frequency wave to deliver less data with faster rate?
Best of luck. The fire risk is not over, but JPL has made it this far. I suspect many JPL homes were lost too.
NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory thanks for sharing. It is interesting how things can come back around. The technology that you developed decades ago is now back home helping you and your surrounding communities. Hang in there my friends. Know that you are surrounded by friends and neighbors (near and far - I'm in North Dakota) who care about you. Stay safe and know that you are cared for. 🌱
Excellent work and support from Nasa's JPL in Pasadena, ca.

2moSo sad to see the devastation of our neighbors to the north of us, just a few miles from Pasadena. Long road to recovery ahead. Be strong and keep the faith. I hope this leads to new building designs and new fire prevention measures, policy changes and budget allocations. Climate change is here to stay, regrettably!
