On January 14th, President Joe Biden awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) to several groups of scientists and engineers, including Dr. Kavita Arora. The PECASE is the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on outstanding scientists and engineers beginning their independent careers. ⭐ According to The White House, this prestigious recognition has been awarded since 1996 to honor exceptional early-career scientists and engineers: "Established by President Clinton in 1996, PECASE recognizes scientists and engineers who show exceptional potential for leadership early in their research careers. The award recognizes innovative and far-reaching developments in science and technology, expands awareness of careers in science and engineering, recognizes the scientific missions of participating agencies, enhances connections between research and impacts on society, and highlights the importance of science and technology for our nation’s future." 🇺🇸 Read more: https://lnkd.in/e5AcwPPB

I was honored to be a panelist at the PA Science Policy Forum. It was a fulfilling experience to share insights on creating policy and building partnerships that leverage science and technology. I always find these opportunities to empower and learn from the next generation of scientists, policymakers, and leaders deeply motivating. Some key themes emphasized during our discussion on science and technology policy included: - Building trust with your audience - Identifying common ground and shared interests - Using plain language and creative communication methods to convey technical information - Critically evaluating the potential intended and unintended consequences of policy decisions (pilot programs can be helpful!) It is important to recognize the essential role of academic research in data-driven policy as we seek solutions to society's most pressing challenges. It's clear that diverse perspectives, experiences, and disciplines will be essential for finding creative and effective solutions.
