Ever wondered how can your mobile phone play a video recorded by an ultra high definition camera and with hundreds of gigabytes in size smoothly? Technology advancements and demand for high resolution video have significantly increased in the past decades. Users are now able to stream 4K content on their devices without any interruption. This revolution caused the file sizes of these videos to go from few megabytes to hundreds of gigabytes making it hard for content providers to store and manage large files. It has also increased the demand for highly capable network solutions to handle the data traffic sent with the increase of digital content. But what is the solution, can companies continue expanding their data servers? This is where compression technologies come into play. Content providers can shrink the size of 100GB file to 100MB in order to distribute these files to the end user. There are dozens of compression technologies in the market that make the day to day video distribution smooth and possible. The goal of each compression (codec) can be different for example the H.264 generation of codecs are used for distribution purposes therefore, used in streaming platforms like Youtube. Conversely, codec like JPEG XS, targets professional environments like live production or broadcast where high quality video data is contentiously sent from venue for example a stadium to the studios and to the viewers without any latency and quality degradation. #videocompression #codecs #broadcast #liveproduction #Compressiontechnologies #H264 #JPEGXS #tech

Great article by Meta on the breakthrough and challenges of integrating AV1 codec support into mobile RTC systems. On top of this, it's a great analysis/report on the metrics that make a video call experience smooth and high-quality. Kudos to the author - shyam sadhwani for a comprehensive and a really informative post.

I am excited to share that our paper entitled "MEDUSA: A Dynamic Codec Switching Approach in HTTP Adaptive Streaming" (w/ Farzad Tashtarian, Hermann Hellwagner, Christian Timmerer) has been accepted for publication in the prestigious ACM Transactions on Multimedia Computing, Communications, and Applications (TOMM) journal (Q1, IF: 5.1). Trying to optimise multi-codec video streaming from a client perspective, we formulate the problem of selecting the appropriate codec for each user and video segment (on a per-segment basis in the outmost case), exploiting key metrics, such as the perceived segment quality (VMAF) and size. To tackle this problem, we develop an adaptive bitrate (ABR) plug-in approach called MEDUSA that can enhance the Quality of Experience (QoE) of the users by up to 42% according to the ITU-T P.1203 model (mode 0) and reduce the transmitted data volume by up to more than 40% achieving a QoE similar to state-of-the-art techniques, reducing the burden on streaming service providers for delivery costs. Why AV1 is Poised for Success? 👇 Adopting AV1 encoding becomes a necessity for forward-thinking broadcasters. Here’s a detailed roadmap to seamlessly integrate AV1 into your streaming workflow: 1. Assess Your Current Infrastructure: The first step is a comprehensive evaluation of your existing streaming setup. This includes examining your hardware capabilities, bandwidth usage, and overall system architecture. Identifying how AV1 fits into your current processes is crucial for a smooth transition. 2. Invest in AV1 Encoding: AV1 promises superior compression efficiency and stellar video quality, which means investing in the right encoding tools is paramount. Consider upgrading to hardware that supports AV1 encoding natively. This is where NETINT’s #Quadra comes into play. Our solutions are designed to enhance your encoding capabilities without compromising on quality or efficiency. 3. Monitor AV1 Adoption: Staying updated with AV1's adoption trends across devices and platforms can significantly influence your strategic decisions. As #AV1 gains traction, understanding where it's being supported can help you prioritize your resources and outreach efforts effectively. 4. Maintain an H.264 Fallback: While you pioneer with AV1, maintaining an H.264 profile ensures that no user is left behind. This dual-strategy allows you to cater to both ends of the spectrum — early adopters and those with older technology. 5. Schedule a Consultation with NETINT Technologies Inc. I'm not kidding!—> it's a strategic move! Engaging with our team at NETINT can provide you with tailored insights and solutions to ensure your AV1 transition is as seamless and beneficial as possible. Embracing AV1 with NETINT's Quadra solutions will future-proof your operations. Let's discuss how we can make this transition a pivotal part of your growth.
