As corporate interest in innovation and startup engagement has increased, two popular approaches have emerged: corporate venture capital (CVC) investing, where companies invest in startups and collaborate on projects, and "venture clienting," which involves collaboration without equity investment. Our president, Amy Daniels Burr, recently spoke with Global Corporate Venturing along with BMW i Ventures and Siemens Energy Ventures about the benefits of both strategies and how corporates can best work with startups. Venture capitalists (VCs) are not just financial backers but also mentors, advisors, and strategic partners. They manage funds from limited partners (LPs), support startups through various growth stages, and build significant relationships in the tech ecosystem. Tim Draper, founder of DFJ, highlights the high-risk, high-reward nature of VC investing. Diversifying portfolios is crucial as many investments may fail, but a few successful ones can yield substantial returns. Janelle Teng from Bessemer Venture Partners emphasizes the need for a deep curiosity for new technologies and a passion for supporting entrepreneurs. The daily life of a VC involves fund planning, fundraising, deal sourcing, evaluating investments, and supporting portfolio companies. Jenny Fielding of Everywhere Ventures explains that VCs wear many hats, making the role both challenging and exciting. The path to becoming a VC has evolved. While finance backgrounds were traditionally preferred, there’s now a trend towards individuals with hands-on experience as operators and founders. Amy Yin from defy.vc suggests immersing yourself in the tech ecosystem, gaining startup experience, building a reputation for being helpful, and starting to invest either through angel investing or by developing an investment thesis. Tim Draper sums it up: “It is a lot of luck, but of course, with a lot of hard work, you will get lucky more often.” If you’re passionate about technology and startups, this article is a must-read for understanding what it takes to thrive in this competitive field. This article discusses the current landscape of venture capital funding, highlighting a shift in activity among top investors post the peak of global startup funding. In the midst of a decline in the number of large late-stage deals, Andreessen Horowitz emerged as the most active venture investor in post-seed rounds for Q1 of 2024. In studying the most active lead investors and seed investors, we are trying to showcase trends in investment patterns and the overall state of the seed funding environment. Notably, we observed a decrease in the number of mega-deals. Great insights from the National Venture Capital Association and PitchBook, which provide THE authoritative quarterly reports on US venture capital activity in the entrepreneurial ecosystem. They released the Q2 report for this CY with some interesting takeaways; "With $55.6 billion invested, deal value rose to an eight-quarter high. However, $14.6 billion of that capital was concentrated in just two companies — CoreWeave and xAI. For everyone else, fundraising is a challenge as LPs remain reluctant to double down on the asset class. Key takeaways; -The market has bottomed out, and valuations are rebounding—but those up rounds are concentrated within a small cohort of high-growth startups, while middle-of-the-road startups are struggling. -Sluggish stock performance for companies outside of the Magnificent 7 is dampening the exit outlook, further entrenching LPs’ caution. -As distribution-to-AUM rates continue to worsen, more VCs are taking to the secondaries market to secure much-needed liquidity." To any VCs in my network, how does this correlate to Australia? #venturecapital #startups #scaleups #funding
