What’s happening with the Navy’s Project Overmatch? Turns out, quite a bit. Navy has quietly and steadily made progress on their essential initiative to advance the DoD’s Combined Joint All-Domain Command and Control (CJAD2C) connectivity campaign. A recent Defense News story confirms that Navy has deployed sophisticated networking and communications capabilities on carrier strike groups. As a warfighter-focused engineering and design firm committed to networking the battlespace, we applaud every step forward. As a defense tech community, we’re all in this together – improving the networking and communication capabilities of our nation’s and allies’ defense forces. Lockheed Martin has been awarded a USD 756 million contract to enhance the Long Range Hypersonic Weapon (LRHW) system. This contract will enable the delivery of additional equipment, systems, software engineering support, and logistics solutions to the US Army, reinforcing the nation’s ground-based hypersonic weapon systems. The LRHW represents a breakthrough in missile technology, combining extreme speed and manoeuvrability with the capability to be launched from mobile ground platforms. The system is designed to deploy the common hypersonic All Up Round (AUR), managed by the U.S. Navy's Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) program, and encompasses the Army's specific canister, a battery operations centre, and transporter erector launchers. Steve Layne, Vice President of Hypersonic Strike Weapon Systems at Lockheed Martin, expressed the company's commitment to advancing the U.S. military's capabilities: “Lockheed Martin is proud to continue our strong partnership with the U.S. government for hypersonic strike capability. With this contract, we will support the U.S. Army to sustain the Long Range Hypersonic Weapon System currently in the hands of U.S. soldiers, produce additional batteries for future fielding, and support flight testing.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dRMWu3ZJ #LockheedMartin #USArmy #hypersonic #missile #weapon #system #defence #industry #technology #military #longrange

Col Purcell started by underscoring that the grounding of the Ospreys by the services after the accident last year with an Air Force Osprey, created a challenge for them. Not having Ospreys – which frankly are a bedrock platform in the transformation of their concept of operations – caused a problem in the WTI. There were some missions they simply could not do, and shifted assets around to do missions which was not their primary mission focus. One mission which has been identified and which MAWTS-1 has been training for is the TRAP mission associated with a maritime strike mission. The need to recover rapidly any personnel downed in a maritime assault mission is something the Osprey is uniquely positioned to do. Only you can’t do it if it is not there. Fortunately, the ban on Osprey use was lifted in time for them to be able to use the Osprey in the maritime strike event within FINEX. https://lnkd.in/eiq7UkJs

Interoperability is the key to success in military exercises like Saber Strike 24. As part of the DEFENDER 24 series, the U.S. Army's 2nd Cavalry Regiment is leading the charge in pushing technology that elevates and improves capabilities. One of the most critical aspects of Saber Strike is integrating new communication equipment for U.S. forces and mission partners. By doing so, the U.S. Army is at the forefront of promoting seamless communication between nations. #SaberStrike24 #MilitaryTechnology #Interoperability https://lnkd.in/e65eSGeU

How about rather than cutting close combat and special operations forces (the tip of the American military spear), DOD cut any DEI and other non operational deterrent and fighting contingent. If an evaluation of the military is taking place it should demonstrate that small can be doable, as long as it is extremely lethal, mobile and includes special services/operation units that can take order of battle to the enemy rather than play the receiving end of conflict.

OPINION: "The Enhanced Lethality Surface Combatant review has laid out plans for the Royal Australian Navy to grow larger, with more firepower in the coming decade to ensure that it can meet the challenges highlighted in the 2023 defence strategic review (DSR). "The navy’s surface combatant force will see the three existing Hobart-class destroyers proceed with a previously planned upgrade to their Aegis combat system from Baseline 8 to Baseline 9, but this will occur sooner than planned. Of the nine planned Hunter-class frigates, only six will be acquired, configured for anti-submarine warfare. This sees a reduction in the number of Tier 1 surface combatants from a planned 12, down to nine ships. However, the review also has suggested the acquisition of six large optionally crewed surface vessels (LOSVs), each with 32 vertical launch missile system (VLS) cells. These will be jointly developed with the United States to provide additional strike capability. "The LOSV sounds like a good investment. It gives the navy 144 cells across the three Hobart-class air warfare destroyers (AWDs), 192 across the six Hunter-class future frigates, and a further 192 across six planned LOSVs), 528 cells in all. That compares to 432 in the original fleet plan of three AWDs and nine Hunter-class frigates. It’s a step up in firepower across a larger fleet of Tier 1 vessels, yet it can be argued that investment in a capability like LOSVs, that sound like 'arsenal ships', should have seen a capability with a far greater number of VLS cells per LOSV. For a reminder of what a real arsenal ship could deliver, South Korea is developing its joint strike vessel that that could each carry 80 missiles of varying types, the US Navy’s Arleigh Burke-class destroyers carry 96 cells, and China’s Renhai-class cruiser with 112. So, the LOSVs, if configured as planned, seem like a missed opportunity to dramatically boost the navy’s firepower. "There’s also the reality that not every Tier 1 ship will be available for operational deployment at any time—given that three ships are required to keep one on station." The TV series "Masters of the Air" sheds light on the harsh reality of air combat during WWII, particularly for the 8th Air Force. The staggering loss of life and harsh conditions faced by B-17 crews underscore the importance of air superiority and survivable strike capabilities in modern conflicts against near-peer threats. The 8th Air Force's "Bloody 100th" suffered heavy casualties, with 757 killed or missing and 923 taken as prisoners of war. The 8th as a whole lost over 26,000 men during the bombing campaign, a significant number compared to other military branches with B-17 crews having a life expectancy of about 11 missions. The United States Air force currently has a total of 123 bombers in its active inventory, including 45 B-1B Lancers, 20 B-2A Spirits, and 58 B-52H Stratoforces. In comparison, during "Black Week" in October 1943, 148 bombers were lost. The tide of the bombing campaigned ultimately turned with the mass introduction of bombers and the P-51 with drop tanks for deep escort missions, showcasing the importance of long-range, affordable, and survivable strike assets for air superiority. We'd all be wise to remember these lessons from the past and at #PhantomWorks we're innovating today for the war fighter of tomorrow.
