It doesn't just appear in our homes by magic! ⚡️ Electricity travels a complex route to get to us, guided by a system similar to our highways. Highways allow cars to move from city to city in the same way our electrical grid moves energy from power plants to homes, schools, and businesses. 🚙 On a highway, when many cars use the same road and exceed what it was designed to handle, traffic slows down or comes to a standstill. 🚗 When this happens, it’s time to widen the road or upgrade it to keep traffic flowing smoothly. The same goes for our power grid. As our world grows more dependent on electricity, how we manage this ‘electric highway’ will shape the future. To support the increased demand, we will need to expand and upgrade our grid. We hope this metaphor helps clarify the issues surrounding our energy needs and how it’s affected by the current state of our grids. We’re on a mission to educate everyone about the importance of our grid infrastructure, while also working to build the systems we need to prepare for the future. 💪

Whenever you plug in your phone or turn on your TV, you expect it to work without any issues, right?  Now imagine one day waking up and nothing is functioning. Not just as a temporary, inconvenient blackout, but a sustained lack of electricity with no end in sight. For many Canadians, this could become a reality if we don’t address the growing challenges to our power grid. By raising our awareness about the challenges facing Canada’s power grid and the steps we need to take to stabilize it, we can help shape a better future for all Canadians. It's up to all of us to advocate for the changes we need to ensure a stable grid. We were honoured to have the Honourable Karina Gould , Burlington MP and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, visit us yesterday! 😊 A longtime supporter of JFE, Minister Gould met with our CEO Ron Harper to discuss our ongoing initiatives for a clean energy future. Her involvement and support is invaluable to our continued progress and leadership in the energy sector! 🤝💙

Ron Harper, leading JFE Shoji Power Canada, has a clear message: Our power system is aging fast, and we’re not ready for the future. More than 70% of our electrical transformers need replacing, and we are too reliant on offshore supply chains for raw materials and equipment manufacturing. In this article from Canadian Manufacturing, Ron points out a glaring reality at the JFE Shoji plant: "We're at a tipping point. North America has just one major producer of the core material we need for transformers, and we're heading towards a severe shortage. We need to expand our local manufacturing and supply chains for this important electrical equipment". This gap threatens not just our power stability, but our progress toward a net-zero economy. Ron is fighting to boost our manufacturing capabilities and wants Canada to start making more right here at home. A friend once showed me a photo of a sunset, painted in dusky pinks and grays, beautifully intersected by power lines with utility towers standing prominently in the middle. "Look," she said, "what a beautiful sunset," not bothered by, or even seeming to notice the grid that framed it. This immense network, the largest machine ever built and a crowning achievement of 20th-century engineering, quietly supports every facet of our modern existence. Yet, we seldom acknowledge its presence. The truth, however, is that the grid is not just something we built, but something that grew with our country, changed as our values changed, and gained its form as we developed as a nation. It represents not just an engineering solution but a cultural tapestry, a collection of business practices, and a living ecosystem. It truly is a testament to human ingenuity and a cornerstone of our modern existence.
