Here's a story about believing in yourself and the power of perseverance: For years, I struggled with public speaking. It wasn't always this way—speaking up was never a challenge until I reached adulthood. I remember someone cautioning me about how I spoke, warning that I might come off as aggressive. That comment got into my head, and before I knew it, I was holding back, scared to speak. This fear lingered for 5 to 7 years, leading to stuttering during impromptu presentations and even flunking on the radio. Determined to overcome this, I enrolled in Toastmasters, refusing to let fear cripple my progress. I chaired an event at work, and though someone asked if it was my first time, I pushed through and did it anyway. But after a while, I felt stagnant and de-registered from Toastmasters, thinking it wasn’t helping. The fears returned, and that’s when I realized—it wasn’t Toastmasters that was the problem, it was me. I took matters into my own hands. I downloaded an app and practiced every night, speaking to an imaginary audience and falling asleep to public speaking affirmations. I shared my struggles with friends, and I made a commitment to myself: I would do it scared, do it shaking, but I would not shy away from speaking. Manifestation is real. Opportunities started coming my way, including a chance to speak through a campaign I was running for my company. Then, one day, I was asked to co-host our annual gala. Remembering my mantra—"do it shaking, do it scared"—I said yes. But this time, I was neither scared nor shaking. I trusted that God and I would figure out the rest. And dare I say, I did exceptionally well. My coworkers called in after the event with congratulations and a "job well done." There were even moments when I had the crowd rolling with laughter. I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity and the Gala team for having faith in me. To employers out there, here’s a lesson: Believe in your staff. Don’t gatekeep. Allow them to safely make mistakes and help them grow in front of your eyes. A little belief from you can result in them believing in themselves.

Some Hard Facts About the Workplace 1. Your boss is not your friend. No matter how close you are, keep it professional. 2. Walls have ears. Be careful who you confide in. A friendly ear might also be a loose mouth. 3. Results matter. Your employer cares about the job getting done. No excuses. 4. Office informants exist. Someone is always updating the boss. Be aware. 5. Project changes can be warning signs. Being pulled from projects or demoted might mean you're on your way out. 6. Keep your private life private. Sharing too much can backfire. 7. Not everyone will like you. Accept that some colleagues might not be fans for various reasons. 8. Read between the lines. Pay attention to body language and tone; they often say more than words. 9. Learn from the best. Instead of feeling inadequate, observe high performers and learn from them. 10. Focus on the job.
