Last week, I was part of a team event in Lincoln. One task the team needed was to get an item from the middle of the lake—a classic exercise in communication, collaboration, and problem-solving. What really caught my attention was a couple of black swans gliding by, almost watching the group struggle with the task... Black swans are rare here in the UK. I thought it was slightly ironic that they watched as the team struggled with identifying what was challenging them, sharing thinking and problem-solving about something far from what they were used to. The swans reminded me of how unpredictable “black swan” events are, the potential impact that small and rare signals can have and how such events can shape how we work together in complex situations. The groups tried to make minor adjustments to the position of the hook, calling out to each other across the lake back and forth. Sometimes, we need to stop and watch like the swans did and reflect on what is showing up and how helpfully or not we are responding to it.
