Stuttering or stammering is a speech disorder that happens when muscles used for speaking twitch or move uncontrollably while speaking. This disrupts the flow of speech and causes pauses, unintended sounds and sticking on words. This condition usually affects children but can have impacts at any age. Early treatment may keep stuttering from continuing into adulthood. It is critical that a child who stutters feels accepted and supported by the adults in their life. The month of May is #StrokeAwarenessMonth. As speech and language therapists, we work with individuals during their rehabilitation journey following a stroke. The faster medical help can be given to someone having a stroke, the less time there is for brain damage to occur. Would you know the signs to be able to act FAST? ▪️ Face weakness: Can the person smile? Has their mouth or eye drooped? ▪️ Arm weakness: Can the person raise both arms? ▪️ Speech problems: Can the person speak clearly and understand what you say? ▪️ Time to call 999: if you see any of these signs.
