💊 "Midomafetamine" - ever heard of it? Language is one of the tools we use to create and shape our reality - which is why I believe the use of this word deserves some attention, if you are willing to pay it of course. The distance put between Lykos' psychedelic-assisted treatment and the word "MDMA" is strategically placed, and it is this strategy that will be the focus of my contribution to the characters on your "feed" - this term is also interesting when you consider what purpose it serves on social media platforms, and how empty people can feel after being "fed" - but the problem with our mental nutrition is beside the point. Propaganda works. That's why we use it and why people fall for it - the War on Drugs was no exception - the successful association of psychedelics with negative stereotypes means that today, the language utilized to develop these understandings will elicit those ingrained associations. A problem is revealed: the need to combat stigma and create a new association for these substances, if we are to improve access more broadly and have the impact on people's lives that I like to think we all hope these treatments will have. In devising a solution to a problem the need for expediency is ever present - so, how do we combat stigma, develop a new understanding and do it fast? You have only one option, use new words and develop associations around those new concepts while avoiding the landmine laid in the 20th century. Ravers take MDMA/Ecstasy, patients in need take Midomafetamine - a clinical sanitization of a word heavily steeped in stigma, even George Carlin would be impressed at the sheer sterilization. The quickest way to make money, and address the stigma around psychedelics is to have an entirely new conversation using different words, rather than combat the stigma head on - the path of least resistance. From a business lens, this solution is ideal. But as is the modern condition, we are stuck wrestling with our humanity and our ability to earn a buck (or billions of bucks in this case). People need this treatment, I remain hopeful that the FDA will approve Lykos' NDA in August. As we continue to develop the means to provide access to psychedelic or psychedelic-inspired medicines, it is imperative that the path taken remains affixed to the aim of maximizing the future benefit to humanity.
With limited treatment options, and no new FDA approved treatments in 25 years, #PTSD represents a significant unmet treatment need for ~13 million Americans each year. A bipartisan group of Wisconsin legislators recently filed a bill to create a psilocybin research pilot program focusing on treatment-resistant PTSD in Veterans. The legislation, sponsored by lawmakers from both parties, would facilitate psychedelic therapy studies through the University of Wisconsin-Madison, building on their pioneering psychedelics research division launched in 2021. 🗣️“Wisconsinites, especially our Veterans struggling with treatment-resistant PTSD, deserve the ‘Right to Try’ the best possible care and support,… I am proud to work across the aisle to propose a bipartisan bill to create a medicinal psilocybin treatment pilot to fulfill our moral duty to our Veterans, who have selflessly served our country.” - Reps. Nate Gustafson This legislation follows the model of Texas’ HB 1802, with the government authorizing and funding the research in collaboration with a research university in the state, and eligibility limited to Veterans with PTSD. We’re proud of Wisconsin and every state continuing to provide access for Veterans and increasing the depth and breadth of research into these life saving therapies! 💫 #psychedelictherapy #psychedelicresearch #wisconsinleg #veteranmentalhealth #wisconsinpolitics
