RACE SERIES NEWS: New #rallying category added to #FIAMotorsportGames 2024 Rallying will be a major highlight at the #FIA Motorsport Games 2024 in #Valencia, Spain, on October 23-27. This edition will introduce a new All-Stars category, featuring top rally drivers, alongside the returning #Rally2, #Rally4 and Historic Rally categories. "Rallying can be a little different depending on the country," explained Carlos Sainz, the double FIA World Rally Champion and four-time #Dakar Rally winner. "Tarmac, for example, is not the most usual surface on continents like #Africa and #SouthAmerica. The FIA Motorsport Games was created to concentrate, during a single weekend, all the motorsport activity worldwide. For this, sporting regulations should encourage every country to be present, so I welcome this increase of categories, especially in rallying.” FIA road sport director Andrew Wheatley added, “Female and male competitors from around the globe, representing their national ASN in modern and historic cars, will be joined by the world's top rally drivers to compete in Spain, showcasing the depth, talent and incredible diversity within the rallying community. We are proud to build on the success of the 2022 edition with new features and expanded categories, which reflect our commitment to promoting dynamic competition in rallying." Why Go-Kart Racing Deserves a Spot in the Olympics https://lnkd.in/eY_7PXgJ The Olympics just wrapped up. Over the last few weeks, you probably saw a lot of breakdancing, racewalking, and trampoline in your feeds. Shoutout to Raygun, by the way. But for all the weird and wacky events at this year's Olympics, one thing you didn't see in Paris was auto racing. Auto racing has never caught on at the Olympics, not that they haven't tried. At the 1900 Summer Olympics, Renault founder Louis Renault and a dozen or so other drivers raced around France in two-seat Citroens and Peugeots. Renault took home the gold and a lofty ₣4,000 cash prize. A second "Olympic Rally" took place during the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, with British racing driver Betty Haig in a Singer Le Mans and Swiss driver Paul Abt in a Riley Falcon both taking home golds. Unfortunately though, while the International Olympic Committee (IOC) acknowledges these races took place, the IOC doesn't recognize either of them as official events. And there hasn't been another attempt to bring motorsports to the Olympics in the 88 years since. In 2001, it seemed all hope was lost. The IOC all but banned motor racing in its updated charter. In chapter 5, a single line stated: “Sports, disciplines or events in which performance depends essentially on mechanical propulsion are not acceptable.” Thankfully, the IOC removed that rule in 2016 and the amended charter from 2023 makes no mention of it. 🔴 NEWS: Formula 1 is considering glued gravel traps as the best solution to enforcing track limits, as teams and FIA are already in discussions. Pirelli‘s chief engineer Simone Berra said that adding glued gravel traps could help prevent chaos around track limits. These gravel traps have first come into use at the Dutch Grand Prix last year. These are a better solution to real gravel traps with stones that can be dragged on track and damage tyres. 🗣️ “Probably the best solution, and it’s something that I know that the teams are speaking with FIA and FIA is speaking with the teams, is trying to use a solution like we have in Zandvoort where they glue the gravel. That could be a good solution because you don’t bring a gravel into the racing line.” Zandvoort added the glued gravel traps last year, as they wanted to avoid stones to be dragged on track by cars going through gravel at some places. This year, the FIA requested tracks to add or extend gravel traps, with Austria showing the biggest change. ⬇️ What do you think? #F1 #Formula1 #DutchGP #Gravel #F1Race #FIA #F12024 #Race #Racing #Racer #GrandPrix #GP #F1Tech #Official #Car #RaceCar #News #Update #F1Racing #Motorsport #RacingUpdate

The 2024 Formula 1 season Formula 1 has returned for its 75th running of the World Championship. The 2024 FIA Formula 1 World Championship started off on February 21, with three days of preseason testing at the Bahrain International Circuit, which will also host the first race of the season on March 2. This season will feature 24 Grands Prix in 21 countries across five continents, with the United States and Italy as the only countries hosting more than one race. The countries hosting the races are Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Japan, China, the U.S., Italy, Monaco, Canada, Spain, Austria, Britain, Hungary, Belgium, the Netherlands, Azerbaijan, Singapore, Mexico, Brazil, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi. Six of the races will feature sprint races: the Chinese, Miami, Austrian, U.S., Sao Paulo, and Qatar Grands Prix. The sprint weekend format was changed for this year’s season with the intention of separating the sprint events from the race events. This year, there will be one practice session on Friday that will be followed by a sprint shootout, which will determine the starting grid for the sprint. The sprint will then be held on Saturday, followed by a qualifying session for the main race. The main race will be held on Sunday. For the first time in the sport’s history, all teams maintained their driver lineups from the previous season. However, more than 10 of the drivers will be out of contracts with their teams at the end of the 2024 season. So far, Lewis Hamilton, George Russell, Oscar Piastri, Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris, and Max Verstappen are the only drivers who have secured team placements beyond the year. Two teams were rebranded: Alpha Tauri Honda RBPT and Alfa Romeo Ferrari. As Sauber prepares to become the Audi works team in 2026, they ended their partnership with Alfa Romeo in 2023. The team has now been rebranded to Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber for the next two seasons before a rebrand comes along again in 2026 as the Audi works team. The Alpha Tauri team was rebranded as the Visa Cash App RB F1 Team. Visa is now a global partner for both the Red Bull Racing team and Visa Cash App RB on a multi-year agreement. A few rules were changed for the 2024 season. This year, drivers are allowed to use DRS one lap after the race has started, on a safety car restart, or on a red flag restart. The power unit allocation per season was increased from three to four per driver. This year, the proposed trial for a ban on tyre blankets was cast aside. Pirelli will remain the official tyre supplier, but the “alternative tyre allocation” that was trialled last year will not be carried on this season. The C0 tyre compound, which was the hardest tyre in the dry tyre range, will not be included in the tyre line-up. And lastly, as a result of the cockpit overheating during last year’s Qatar Grand Prix, teams will be allowed to install a scoop on the car in order to cool down the cockpit area and the driver. #Formula1 #F1 #2024
