I’ve been planning events for communities, regional and provincial events for most of my life. I organized my first community event when I was 15 and organized a powwow when I was 18. Over the last 30 years I’ve had some really great experiences and success and many many times I’ve had low turnouts, lost money and had to cancel sessions. In my 20s and early 30s I would feel bad if my events didn’t work out. But the more you do it, the easier it gets. I’d say I have a 40% success rate of things going REALLY well and exceeding my expectation. The other 60% is breaking even, having to cancel or navigating lower numbers and losing money. Most of my success comes from private bookings. The best thing about all these years of learning and discovery is that I no longer think it’s because I suck. I no longer feel rejected when people don’t show up, can’t show up or have no interest in showing up. It’s amazing how your mind, body and spirit adapts to experiencing so called failure when you just keep showing up over and over again. Sometimes I sell out in a week and other times I can barely sell a seat after 4 months of promotion. I’m moving into some really cool territory this year. And as I evolve and expand, that means I have to pull back on some other things because I can’t do it all. My last public 5hr Virtual Cultivating Safe Spaces Training is on March 26th and the Cultivating Safe Spaces Conference is June 12-13 and my last live/in-person Train the Trainer is June 14th.
