Ever wonder what it takes for an airport to host EAA AirVenture Oshkosh? According to EAA, this year’s attendance was approximately 677,000, up from the previous record of 650,000 last year. And at Wittman Regional Airport, there were 21,883 aircraft operations in the 11-day period from July 20-30, which is an average of approximately 148 takeoffs/landings per hour when the airport is open. To see what efforts go into making this happen, here's a link to "AirVenture Today," with the story on page 22-23. https://lnkd.in/e5BCBH7X #OSH23

A testament to the power of faith and one man’s determination to overcome a life-altering accident. Be sure to read the entire story.
Last summer, longtime warbird pilot Paul Barnett, EAA Lifetime 456283, nearly lost his right leg while working on an airplane and the engine unexpectedly fired. A little more than a year later, he flew this Corsair into EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2024. “The Lord was with me, my wife protected me, I had zero infection, I exceeded all expectations. My family and AirVenture family just prayed and reached out, and the Lord above just protected me.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/gDtaPwPu

You gotta love the Marines. A friend's son is in USAF tech school training to be an F-15 maintainer, and his sister was just commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the USMC. Gives me hope for the future. This photo of the new Lieutenant in front of a field artillery piece reminds me why I love the Marines. Regardless of which branch we served in (21 years USAF here), you've gotta admire the heritage, standards, and sheer moxie of the Corps. To illustrate; As a new flight engineer, I was on a layover in the Caribbean. Following dinner at a local restaurant, the captain, first office and I were walking back to our hotel when we were accosted by a young man pointing a gun at us and demanding our wallets and watches. In the blink of an eye, the FO (a Marine) cold-cocked the perp, and we hustled back to the hotel. Arriving out of breath, the captain berated the FO, saying, "Are you crazy? That guy had a gun!" Upon which the FO replied, "I'm pretty sure it was fake. And besides, it was pointed at you." Semper Fi, Lieutenant!

Whatever happened to great advertising like this? Makes me just want to go buy an A-10. GBA!
Retro Defense Industrial Base posters are something special. The last one was a fascinating display of support. We've gotta bring these types of advertisements back. Enjoy. 💪 /// HOLDEN SENDS

The National Celebration of General Aviation D.C. Flyover was a flight to remember. On May 11th, not just one, but 54 general aviation aircraft soared through the skies over our nation's capital; Flying along the Potomac River, pivoting left around the Lincoln Memorial and parading above the National Mall before exiting P-56 to the south at the Smithsonian Institute "Castle." With the backing of Congress and the support of 11 government agencies, the AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association) event was an unqualified success, showcasing the history and contributions of general aviation. My good friend Paul Mercandetti was invited to participate in his 1946 Globe GC-1B "Swift," and I was along for the ride of a lifetime. Enjoy these photos taken prior to takeoff at Frederick Municipal Airport, MD, and airborne over the Capital.

Watch the National Celebration of General Aviation live this Saturday! Saturday, May 11th, a diverse array of historic aircraft will fly over Washington, D.C.'s National Mall, honoring general aviation's contributions to the nation and marking AOPA's 85th Anniversary. The flyover will commence at 11:30 a.m. EDT, streaming live on AOPA's YouTube channel (@flywithaopa). I’m priveledged to take part flying with my good friend Paul Mercandetti in his 1946 Globe Swift. It’s not everyday you get to fly through the most restricted/prohibited airspace in the US! After over a year of coordination capped with multiple virtual and live flight briefings, we are a go for the mission. Thank you AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association) and all the federal and state agencies, including the US Congress, that made this possible.

EAA is an amazing week every year. I keep going back because there’s so many things I’ll never see you and enjoy because there’s so many other things that I am enjoying is unreal. I think there were more than 10,000 small airplanes there, and the they were parked in rows and rows and rows. And I’m sure there were more than 50 speakers every day for a week. It was great to see some old friends and meet some famous aviators.
