Year of the Dram-gon! "Chinese whisky" is taking flight but how should we define it? A deeper dive into the topic, including the recent release of Pernod Ricard's "The Chuan", which the company heavily promoted as a "first" for China and an expression of local "terroir", while both The Whisky Advocate and Global Drinks Intel reported that it included distillate from Scotland. So, how do we define a "Chinese whisky", especially given that the current standards in China are quite lax compared to those in Scotland, the United States and elsewhere? And given that the China market has many brands that have similar names, fonts, bottles et al to some of the world's top sellers, creating confusion for consumers? I look at this in my newest Grape Wall newsletter, including "Chinese whisky" definitions by trade people, how the current standards are due for revision shortly, and steps producers focused on locally made whisky can take to help guide consumers and create confidence in the industry. Was a pleasure sharing insights with Katie Silver of BBC - everyone is asking, with the rise of foreign liquors in China, what's the future of Chinese Baijiu? Here's my take: 🥃 Baijiu has a special place in Chinese culture, and is consumed straight at social gatherings, especially between men 🥃 Foreign spirits, on the other hand, dominate China's rising cocktail and mixology scene, which is increasingly popular among Women Rather than replacing one another, they are expanding and diversifying drinking opportunities 🥃 What about whiskey? Last year we found that it's a male dominated market, but this year we see a rise in female drinkers💁🏻♀️ Who are Chinese whiskey drinkers: 🥃 70% are between 26 and 40 years old 🥃 Half earn over 20,000 RMB a month, making them high-earners by China's standards. 🥃 79% of them reside in tier-1 or new-tier-1 cities. 🥃 Whiskey drinkers drink more frequently than consumers of other alcohols *data from a recent survey by Daxue Consulting's public research department #Chinamarket #WineandSpirits #Whiskey https://lnkd.in/dTZBBpS2

Whisky takes a shot at China's baijiu-dominated market The Lunar New Year is traditionally a time for gathering with family and friends to eat and drink. And for hundreds of years, the drink of choice in China for these celebrations has been baijiu - a clear spirit made with fermented grains which packs a potent punch. Baijiu is also often drunk straight and at social events such as weddings and birthdays. Its Alcohol-By-Volume (ABV) can top 60% - in comparison spirits like scotch whisky and tequila typically have an ABV of around 40%. "Baijiu certainly still has its place in Chinese liquor consumption, even among young consumers," says Allison Malmsten, public research director at Daxue Consulting. It accounts for well over 90% of China's spirits sales, with annual sales of around $160bn (£127bn). However, in recent times drinks from abroad have been growing in popularity in what is the world's biggest spirits market. #investment #opportunity #whiskycollection #whiskylover #whiskybarrel #whiskycask #invest #investor #Investing #investors #assets #asset #assetmanagement #assetprotection #whisky #whiskylife #scotland https://lnkd.in/gEDry8ff

Interesting article on the growth of Chinese whisky distilleries. The argument is that despite the risk of increasing tension between China and the West, there is an opportunity for whisky to take a bigger market share from baijiu. There is a desire for homegrown success stories in China. If these distilleries are able to produce a high-quality product, they're likely to get domestic support. The electric vehicle market makes a good comparison. Personally, I find the recent boom in 'world whiskies' absolutely fantastic. A rising tide raises all ships 🥃 https://lnkd.in/gtZC6JD6

As we have been discussing in our business meeting recently @ Whisky Cask Club the growth of China into the Whisky business is only just beginning. In 2022, sales of whisky in China were valued at $2.3bn, according to market research firm Euromonitor International. That figure is expected to almost triple by 2027 as the whisky market there is expected to grow at around five times the rate seen globally. Those sales are being driven by young, middle class, urban, educated and increasingly female drinkers. https://lnkd.in/gxygt5-n #alternativeinvestments #whiskylovers #whisky #liquidgold #singlemalt #whiskycasks

Australian Wine Triumphs at China Roadshow, Setting the Stage for Growth 🍷 Australian wines made a powerful comeback at the 2024 China Roadshow, with Wine Australia leading the charge. Held from 20-28 August, this trade mission featured 50 exhibitors showcasing over 90 Australian wine brands across Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and Guangzhou. With more than 2,500 Chinese trade visitors attending, including influential buyers and media, the event marked a key moment in re-establishing Australia’s wine presence in China following the lifting of duties earlier this year. 🍇 Wine Australia’s General Manager, Marketing, Paul Turale, highlighted the overwhelming enthusiasm for Australian wines. The event not only allowed producers to reconnect with Chinese consumers but also sparked optimism for future growth in the region. As Turale noted, the warm reception reaffirms the strong bond between Australian wines and the Chinese market, pointing to the potential for increased export sales and long-term success. 🚀 Looking ahead, Australian wine will continue to build on this momentum, with a strong presence at upcoming events such as the China International Import Expo and ProWine Shanghai in November. As part of a broader market diversification strategy across Asia, Wine Australia aims to solidify its place in China’s competitive wine market through ongoing engagement and targeted marketing efforts. #AustralianWine #WineAustralia #ChinaRoadshow #WineTrade #WineIndustry #WineExport
