Every year, the world celebrates Earth Day, a day that demonstrates support for the protection of our amazing planet and raises awareness of environmental issues.  Aren't we fortunate to have an amazing ecosystem that allows many types of living organisms to interact and survive in the ideal conditions for life—not too warm and not too cold with the perfect amount of water. And our technology today allows us the ability to see how our use of the Earth’s resources are affecting us, both today and in the future.  The sad part, our livable ecosystem faces many issues, from climate change to air pollution and if left unchecked, could ruin life for future generations. So, what can we do to acknowledge & celebrate Earth Day? Consider what type of green acts you can take up; such as biking to work or washing your laundry in cold water. Why not grab a trash bag and pick up trash in your local park or along roadways. And, plant a tree. Turn off your lights when you aren’t in a room to conserve energy and power. These are the small habits that can help make a change. Have a wonderful Earth Day!

So yesterday was Earth Day. It was great in some ways, seeing so many positive messages about action, motivating stories, and scientific research and breakthroughs. There's just one problem - nearly every post I saw was anthropocentric. It was about sustainable aviation fuels, electric vehicles, and reductions in smog. What is missing from this conversation is the natural world outside humanity: even if the worst of climate change comes to happen, humanity in some form will likely live on. What won't live on is the breadth of biodiversity and complex ecosystems that have formed over the last several million years. Every time we loose species, and ecosystems break, it threatens not just humanity but global ecological integrity. I urge everyone to refocus away from the 'importance' of humanity (we're just one species - though admittedly responsible for the problems) and focus on saving our global ecosystems, and the species which had no part in creating our current disaster. Yes, we need to reduce emissions (among many other tasks) but we also need to work of conservation and preservation of existing natural spaces and ecosystems. Humanity will have to make sacrifices (especially those of us living in western, developed countries) to preserve nature, before its too late and we loose countless and non-quantifiable characteristics of planet earth.
