A few eye opening realizations have been a part of my learning of late. While we take a lot of our passions, activities and contributions for granted, recently I realized that the source of all my passion projects has been empathy and emotion based. Social intelligence and empathy play pivotal roles in sustaining traditions, fostering community bonds, and ensuring economic empowerment etc and is extremely prevalent in all the passionate people in the field of Handicrafts of India. It is probably the same in other fields as well. a small change of perspective showed me what kind of social intelligence our artisans might have. Empathy is crucial for artisans to create culturally resonant artworks that capture the essence of India's rich heritage. It allows them to connect deeply with their craft, infusing their creations with authenticity and meaning. Moreover, empathy facilitates respectful interactions with buyers and collectors, promoting the appreciation and preservation of traditional crafts. Imagine a world devoid of painting artists, and the very thought sends a shiver down the spine. Presently, the plight of folk artists is disheartening, as their unique and culturally rich expressions face the threat of extinction. In ancient India, folk arts were a cornerstone of entertainment, passed down through generations for over 1000 years. These art forms, created without formal qualifications, embody the cultural essence of their origins. However, the lack of appreciation, buyers, and encouragement in contemporary times places these folk art traditions on the brink of vanishing. Do we want our folk artists, the custodians of our cultural heritage, to suffer and starve due to a lack of opportunities? These artists play a vital role in preserving centuries-old Indian art, yet they face challenges of respect, recognition, and financial sustainability. Listening to the poignant tales of Abhishek Joshi, a renowned Phad artist, and a record holder, highlighted the urgent need for collective action. While the government provides contracts for flyover wall art, all of us must rally together and find meaningful ways to support these artists. Chauk Pura, a traditional folk art form from Bengal, particularly thrives in the Purulia district. This intricate floor painting is closely associated with the Kurmi Mahato community and is most notably practiced during the Bandna festival, a significant celebration where people give thanks for the cattle that play an essential role in their agrarian lives. In the Kurmali language, Chauk Pura means “Alpona,” and this art form is characterized by its beautiful, flowing designs made from a sticky solution of rice flour mixed with natural ingredients like cactus sap or Gamar tree leaves. These motifs, often featuring geometric patterns such as circles, triangles, and curved lines, are drawn by the women of the community. Each pattern holds symbolic meanings related to fertility, prosperity, and spirituality. This tradition is more than just an art form; it is a ritual deeply embedded in the cultural and religious fabric of the region. The designs are created on the courtyards and floors starting from the tulsi mancho (an altar with a basil plant) and extending to the entrances of homes, symbolizing the connection between the divine and daily life. However, like many traditional practices, Chauk Pura is at risk of fading as younger generations migrate towards urban areas and modern lifestyles. Efforts to document and revive these traditions are crucial to preserving this unique aspect of Bengal’s cultural heritage. Today, I had a heartwarming conversation with my Dadi Ma about her lifelong tradition of wearing sarees. Despite the soaring temperatures, she drapes herself in this beautiful attire every day. When I asked her why, she shared a touching story that left me reflecting on the essence of cultural heritage. Dadi Ma has been wearing sarees since she was 7 years old and now, at almost 85, it’s a tradition she holds dear. She explained that sarees are more than just clothing; they are a symbol of tradition, identity, and unity. Each state in India boasts its unique saree style, representing its rich cultural tapestry. Key takeaways: Cultural Legacy: Sarees embody the diverse traditions of India, with each state having its own unique style and draping method. Identity & Unity: Regardless of the draping style, sarees connect generations, highlighting a collective cultural identity.
