Great research (again!) from Brad Law at DPI NSW. His paper published May 13 analysed koala populations in the State Forests of northern NSW, and found that populations are 'high and stable' in these production forests (which are earmarked for the Great Koala National Park). More importantly, he found that koala populations are not influenced by timber harvesting, nor by land tenure - i.e. whether forests are held in sustainably managed areas where harvesting is permitted, or in national parks, has little impact on koala populations. So I have to question whether the NSW government has any understanding of the science, when it seems prepared to destroy an important driver of regional socio-economic wellbeing to create national parks that will do nothing to change koala populations? Good decision-making does not ignore objective science, Ms Sharpe!!!

Hellen is a #Kenyan fish farmer who participated in the all-value-chain-inclusive program to increase productivity and profitability through skill upgrades, quality inputs, financing, and market availability. "An Integrated Approach to Enhancing #Tilapia Farmer Productivity and Market Linkages" was designed by Lattice and Idh as a two-year ecosystem-based collaborative program to create impact. We brought together #valuechain players with 50 #smallholderfarmers spread across Western and Eastern Kenya right at the centre. These 50 have trained 400 other farmers. 🤝 The farmers have established a savings and credit cooperative (SACCO) called Samaki Bora to pool resources to negotiate better loan terms and to facilitate economies of scale in the value chain. This includes buying feed in bulk, improving market access for fingerlings and whole fish, and transportation. The SACCO initiative aims to enhance productivity and profitability while promoting inclusive economic development. Additionally, members can benefit from knowledge sharing and collective decision-making, which empowers them 💪 This cooperative approach is essential for ensuring the resilience and sustainability of the farmers involved in the project. “Industry we’ve relied on is no longer viable”. The more I learn about agriculture and biodiversity, the more I want to learn about agriculture and biodiversity. And, with all the doom and gloom, I can understand the excitement around digital worlds and artificial intelligence. Escapism through digital innovation is tempting. However, Te Taiao needs us to be present. It needs us to understand it, and it needs our knowledge to be deep, not shallow.
